Viva la Vida

Coldplay release their fourth album "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends" on Parlophone. The album comprises 10 brand new tracks, recorded in London, Barcelona and New York with producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. "Viva La Vida" follows the hugely successful album "X&Y", which has sold 10 million copies since its release in 2005.
Customer Review: Why did they paint on the Delacroix?
As with most all uber-hyped pop albums, this one doesn't go deep and raw enough to be fantastic (if it did, it would make too many enemies). However as chart toppers go, this one is straight from the heart, and will remain on my playlist for a long time. Chris Martin singing 'you didn't get to heaven, but you made it close/you didn't get to heaven, but you aaa.... (almost?)' is hard to forget. all songs have a crunchy revolutionary anthem feel that fits Martin like an old leather coat. One that i'll be wearing for a while.
Customer Review: If it wasn't so overhyped, I might be less critical...
Coldplay is good. They're better than most. Most rap, most country, most rock and DEFINITELY most pop. But Viva la Vida is extremely overexposed, and Coldplay have long been riding a tidal wave of mediocrity over the heads of the consumers. Regarding their most recent release, the lyrics are interesting, the melodies pretty, the songs epic in scope, but rather pedestrian when all the synthesizers are stripped away. Chris Martin has a nice voice, but not an inspiring one. But, then again, the same might be said about U2, and look what they've accomplished. At least Coldplay aren't a ripoff (well, yes, they do bear more than a passing nod to U2, but I mean ripoff in the "you've been robbed" kind of way)...at worst you might feel like you spent too much on the CD - you won't be wondering why you bought it in the first place. I probably wouldn't be so critical had I not been expecting considerably more from their new CD. The song "Viva la Vida" was stuck in my head by about the fifth time I saw the stupid iTunes commercial. It's arranged in a way to make it a depaparture from typical pop/rock drivel, and I like its bass pulse: solid without being bombastic. Nice layering of sounds, but it sounds canned overall. There are a couple of tunes that sound like they borrowed a page from Sgt. Pepper (but who HASN'T borrowed a page from Sgt. Pepper?), and a few that suggest to me a hasty trip from concept to final mix. HOWEVER, if you think I'm being overly critical, you should hear my rants about 99.9999999% of the rest of the music that I have been subjected to and tortured with over the years. Overall, I'm pleased by Coldplay's latest. I give it 7 points for every single track being worthy of repeated listens, 1 point for the single "Viva la Vida" having the incredible capacity to get stuck in your head, minus 2 points for the CD as a whole not living up to the hype, but I'm giving those 2 points back as extra credit for still being better than most of what else the recording industry attempts to shove down our throats. 80%. That's a solid B. Good effort.

Antonio Carlos Jobim: An All Star Tribute

WINNER OF...
1995 JazzTimes Reader Poll- Best Video- First Runner Up

Direct from Brazil in his last recorded performance, Antoine Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) is joined by an international delegation of jazz giants to recreate his classic melodies in a beautiful, concert-length “Thank You.” With over four hundred songs to his credit including the unforgettable Girl From Ipanema, Jobim virtually single handedly brought the world Bossa Nova by adapting the percussive excitement of the samba to the intimacy of the guitar while echoing the melodies and harmonies of Cool Jazz. This classic, concert-length "Thank You" includes: Girl From Ipanema, Once I Loved, O Grande Amor, No More Blues, Wave and more
Customer Review: Farewell To A Legend
"Tom" Jobim died only a few months after this concert, so it was one of his last performances. He was truly a legend and if you love music you really need to acquaint yourself with his. Beautifully complex rhythms and harmonies that do not wear thin with repeated listening--the hallmark of great music. Even without understanding the lyrics his music evokes combinations of deep emotions, including a sad/sweet longing that has no English translation from the Portuguese. I'll not mention all of the artists that appear in this concert, but only draw your attention to Gal Costa, who has become one of my favorite Brazilian singers. Check out her earlier CDs. You will not be disappointed!
Customer Review: Impressive
Before watching this DVD I had never heard of Gal Costa. What a pleasant surprise to see her perform. Antonio himself appears in this one for Luiza and Wave: very nice. I couldn't appreciate John Henricks performance, too much scatting and not very good. That's just my opinion. Gonzalo Rubalcaba didn't impress me either. For me, the real standout performance was by Gal Costa. She does very cool A Felicidade with Herbie; and then an amazing So Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce. Also, Herbie is an amazing keyboard player. It is as though the instrument is part of him. Buy it!

We've all seen them. Tourists, that stick out like sore thumbs. Yet when we travel, we forget about the tourists we've seen and make the same mistakes. Blending in isn't just for tourists. There are plenty of foreigners who live and work in foreign countries and forget how important it is to adapt to the host country. Not looking like a tourist has many advantages. Below you will find some tips on how to blend in while in Latin America.

Why Blend In?

For starters, it's safer to look like a local than a tourist. Tourists are often targeted by thieves and pick-pockets. And given the special tourist prices, which are higher than the normal prices. Second, dressing like a tourist can be disrespectful at times. For example, when entering churches or cathedrals in Latin America, you shouldn't wear sleeveless shirts, shorts or flip-flops. Third, you won't get stared at or pointed at for being a gringo.

Blending in is two parts, physically and socially. Physically involves what you look like and socially involves how you act. While there are somethings that you can't change, there is plenty that you can. Taking Latin American cultures and customs into consideration is that polite thing to do and will help you will enjoy your time here.

Blending in Physically

While there are plenty of blond haired, blue eyed Latin Americas, there are far more dark haired and dark eyed ones. And on the whole, Latin Americas are shorter than their American or European counterparts. And although they aren't super thin, they are not very heavy either, but rather in between.

Obviously there's not much that you can do about your height. And apart from dying your hair or wearing contacts, you probably can't change those features either. However, your physical appearance is more than just this and your clothes and accessories that you use can either help you blend in or cause you to stand out.

Let's start with clothing. For the most part, cargo pants aren't used by most Latin Americans. So if you're wearing them, it's a sure sign that you're a tourist. Shorts are mainly used for the beach, although some women do wear them in the city. Be aware that showing your legs is an open invitation to whistles, stares and kisses being blown at you. Both men and women use jeans and they tend to be tighter than the jeans worn in places such as the USA. In the summer, women can wear skirts and men shorts.

Shoes are also an easy way for people to tell if you're a tourist or not. Ditch the flip flops, they're beachwear, and Birkenstocks and opt for comfy dress shoes. Thousands of Latin Americans walk all over the place in dress shoes, so you can too.

Although there are tons of wonderful shirts that have the city or country that you've visited written on the front, save those for when you get home. Button down shirts or t-shirts for both guys and gals should be fine. Just keep in mind that clothing is worn a bit tighter than what you may be used to, so leave the baggy clothes at home.

Keep in mind that seasons are the opposite here than what they are in the northern hemisphere. And although it may be pretty cold where you are in March, it's actually the end of the summer and the beginning of fall. Locals start wearing fall clothing around that time, so if you show up in shorts and a tank, people will know that you're not from around here. In the summer months, January to March, it does get warm. But depends on where you are, it might not be as warm as what you're used to. Twelve hours of daylight mean that there's less sun and less heat. It tends to cool off at night, so be sure to bring a jacket with you.

Lastly, ditch the hats and sunglasses. Sombreros really aren't worn by the majority of the people here. Sunglasses are more of a fashion statement than anything. If you are going to wear sunglasses, make sure it's sunny. There's really no reason to wear sunglasses here in the middle of winter. And it should go without saying that walking around with a guidebook under your arm and a camera around your neck won't make you look like a local. Try copying the necessary pages of your guidebook and taking those with you. Stick your camera in a backpack or purse. As for money, and ID cards, just take what you need. If you're going out for coffee, you won't need 100 dollars. ID, passports, credit cards and the like should never be with you while you're out on the town. Carry a copy if necessary, but leave the originals in a safe place.

Desde Acá

Latin American Music and Dance form a big part of Latin American culture. The ones that have got us Kiwis excited the most are Salsa, Merengue and Tango. Most Latin bands play a mixture of Salsa and Merengue when performing at Latin clubs around New Zealand. Tango seems to take a back seat and evenings usually start with Tango before the bands arrive. You will also find a bit of Cha Cha happening at the clubs, with the most popular song being "Let's Get Loud"! Most cities in New Zealand have adopted these dances as their own with training institutes and Latin clubs emerging everywhere. On the other hand, at the events you will also see a bit of Rueda with anything from 10 to 50 dancers in the circle.

As the population of dancers taking up Latin Americal dancing is increasing, other variations such as Mambo, Bachata, Cumbia, Rumba. Every now and then, there is an event that has a Bateria followed by Samba all round. Most Brazilian events in Wellington are organised by the guys at Wellington Batucada.

Having said that, Salsa is still the crowd pleaser. Cuban Style Salsa is more popular in New Zealand clubs, although Linear style is gaining in popularity. However, the best dancers seem to save their Linear moves for competitions and performances. With more and more Kiwi dancers getting into in, it shouldn't be long before we start seeing council organised events meant for hundreds of dancers. The new Waitangi Park in Wellington would be a perfect location for a community event of this kind.

Symphonic Rock

Customer Review: Great Sound
Ok, this album is not for everyone, it is only for those who truly appreciate music and know how to reconize truly good sounding music. It isn't exactly what I would cruise down the road with the windows down and turned up loud - but it is superb for relaxing at home, chilling, working and not wanting some loud screaming of lyrics or talking in general to interrupt your workflow (if you are like me and don't like dead silence when working, this is PERFECT!) As a matter-in-fact I have it playing right now as I type this.....give it a shot, but only if you are a true music lover!
Customer Review: Good background music
This is a good CD for background music for just hanging around or having a party of any sort.

EMG, Inc first started manufacturing guitar pickups back in 1976, known as EMG pickups. Over the years they have earned the reputation for quality, clear sounding pickups used by many professional artists. ESP guitars and Jackson guitars currently use EMG pickups as their standard pickup design. Their high output is preferred by hard rock and heavy metal guitarists because of the pickups higher gain output as opposed to most lower output pickups. Some of the bands and artists who currently endorse EMG pickups are Tom Morrello, Zakk Wylde, Stephen Carpenter, Metallica, Slayer and many others

The most common EMG pickups are the EMG 81 and 85. The EMG 81 is usually considered to be the lead pickup and is more commonly used in the bridge position, while the EMG 85 is mainly used as a rhythm pickup more used in the neck position.

Personally I have had great success with using EMG pickups in a Gibson Les Paul and 7 string ESP guitar especially if you are into heavier sounding music. The clarity, deeper tone, and added gain are what make the pickups more suitable. One negative thing about the EMG active pickups is the need for a 9 volt battery, but it's not much of a problem because the battery lasts for a long time. You just need to make sure you replace the battery at least every 6 months because of tone loss over time.

Installation for a set of EMG pickups is fairly easy depending on the type of guitar you have. With the right tools I was able to install a set of Zakk Wylde custom EMGs in Gibson Les Paul in under an hour. As long as you follow the right installation diagrams for your type of guitar you should not run into any problems. For more information about EMG pickups and to learn to play guitar check out CrazyOldManMusic

Speed of Sound

Coldplay Return in 2005 with "Speed of Sound", the First Single from their Third Album "x&y". Includes Two Brilliant NON-LP B-sides: "Things I Don't Understand" and "Proof".
Customer Review: You need the single, even if you bought the album!
If you're a Coldplay fan, you were probably as excited as I was to hear the first outstanding single from X&Y. "Speed Of Sound" is as good as Coldplay gets, sounding like an updated version of "Clocks." What makes this release essential, though, are the b-sides. Sure, you may have already picked up the album, but you'll need "Things I Don't Understand" and "Proof." Both songs, without question, could have made the track list for X&Y. "Things I Don't Understand" is an uptempo jam, very reminiscent of New Order's "Regret." In fact, it's probably one of their strongest b-sides to date, along with "One I Love" from the "In My Place" single. According to Coldplay.com, the track was scheduled to be on X&Y, but it was pulled at the last minute. "Proof" is another ballad, and although it's not the best song they've ever recorded, it would probably be album material for most other bands. If you're new to collecting Coldplay singles, this is one of the best to start with. "Things I Don't Understand" alone makes it a worthy purchase. I would also recommend checking out the singles from A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which all have excellent b-sides.

Canciones De Mi Padre: A Romatic Evening In Old Mexico

Customer Review: conciones de mi padre
Love this DVD.I have 3 copies,2 in DVD, 1 in vhs. I also have all her Spanish CD's. She has such a beautiful voice.
Customer Review: I love it
I was really young when this came out, but I adored it. My father bought the soundtrack, and I watched it everytime it came on WTTW. My mom made a costume for me that was practically identical to the one Linda Ronstadt wore during "Y Andale." It made me want to learn more about my culture. I still love this concert, and now my son watches it with me.

It surprises us when this type of thing is said and revealed but it happens more often than we sometimes realise.

Spiritual inspirational leadership which is vibrant genuine and sincere is so needed.

King Solomon, with all his wisdom, fame, wealth, popularity and business acumen, became bored.

Do you ever hear people say that today? "Oh, I am bored. I have nothing to do. There is nowhere to go!"

People need God to give shape and purpose for their lives. It was only when Solomon turned away from Almighty God that he became increasingly dissatisfied.

The issues Solomon dared to write about are the same basic issues which bother many people today. Solomon's writings are highly relevant.

He has big important significant questions. Routine bored him. The sun rose and set every day. It never seemed to change. That is not monotony. That is order.

This man who had known such wisdom was baffled, and he began to find life wearisome.

That happens when you marginalise God.

When a man turns from God it is more serious than simple boredom and weariness. When a nation turns from the ways of God, it gets into a terrible tangle. How many nations are in just this very confusion and disarray in these present days?

Solomon decided to become involved in more things. That is not the answer either.

Surely our lives will suddenly change if we have more television, more radio, more travel, more music, more entertainment!

Solomon landed up in a sorry state. It was as though he was just going round in circles and getting nowhere.

He had wandered far and it showed. In his search for satisfaction he explored so many avenues.

If only, at that point, he could have heard these words of Jesus which Peter heard, "Follow Me and I will make you", and if he had responded as Peter responded what a transformation there would have been.

There is one thing you can be sure of - if you follow Jesus Christ you will never be bored!

Creative Guitar 1: Cutting Edge Tech

The aim of Creative Guitar 1 is to help any rock guitarist who feels stuck in a rut. The book focuses on refining playing techniques, explaining the nuts and bolts of theory in an accessible manner, as well as how to practice efficiently, and even demonstrates lots of new licks. This book promotes a self-sufficient approach to learning that will give guitarists new artistic directions in every aspect of their playing. The accompanying CD features detailed examples of penatonic patterns, minor arpeggios and backing tracks so the guitarist can apply these instructions to their individual style of playing, helping them to become more creative musicians.
Customer Review: Great gift!
I purchased this for my 22 year old son. He is an avid guitarist and is enjoying the book while home on winter break for college. He has been playing for 7 years and asked for this for Christmas.
Customer Review: A must-read for any guitarist looking to take it to the next level
Guthrie Govan proves not only to be an amazing guitarist, but also an excellent teacher. This book will have you feeling inspired to say the least. After reading many of the sections in this book I felt as excited to touch the guitar as I did the first time years ago. Guthrie's love for music and especially the guitar is inspirational. This is by far the best guitar book I have ever read. Not only does it provide excellent technical strategies, but it also gives great insight on how and why certain sounds are produced. The book maintains a light-hearted approach and will not leave you disappointed pick it up if you want to play better.

Lex Parsimoniae is Latin for "Law of Parsimony", which pulled out into its simplest form is the The Law of what can be spared, should.

This is a theory that I have been studying for the past year and through observation believe that this can be applied to all situations that require a more efficient, functional solution. This paradigm has many names, but is best know as Occam's Razor. His razor suggests that when resources are limited or when speed of function is essential, design / complexity trade-offs should be based on what does the least harm to the probability of success, however that is defined.

Form is Function

There is a school of thought that beauty in design results in good function, but I prefer to subscribe the fact that just concentration on the functionality will by its very nature, create its own aura of design. Sometimes, the focus on functional efficiency inspires a feeling that goes beyond aesthetics and ultimately give us the sense that its form is of a higher echelon.

Barrier To Entry

The brain is an amazing piece of kit. One of its most amazing functions is its ability to optimise when processing data. Each brain has been trained over many years (or maybe it inherently has the ability) to simplify individual objects into groups. Instead of seeing each individual blade of grass, the mind sees a field. Millions of pieces of data grouped into one object because it knows, to comprehend millions of pieces of grass would take and enormous amount of effect. Effect that could be focused elsewhere. So it generalises to make life easier. This sort of information overload can happen in design as well; Too much will distract from your likely objective. Remember that 7 Second Rule? If your web app or website has 7 seconds to impress then wouldn't you prefer showing off your functional muscles? How useful your app is? and not long it takes to load the really cool (bandwidth crunching) design? Remember how it easy it is to make your mind up about someone when you them for the first time. Same rules apply.

Just Do It!

What are your objectives and goals? Hopefully, when developing a web app or website, to make your (or your users) life easier! And let's remember, this 'thing' we call the Internet is broken. So don't break any further with dodgy CSS and bloated javascript. Functional Turn Around is the most impressive aspect for me these days. Spend time developing how the app works, refine it, refine it again, then again. Then when it works, design around the edges. If you like Latin phrase then try this one:

"entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", or "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity"

or just remember, K.I.S.S - Keep it Simple, Stupid!
