THE SHINS - RIDE - T-SHIRT

I'm sure you've seen the ads: Schoenhut, Dexter, Fisher-Price. These are all brands of toy pianos that are marketed to parents of toddlers.

Many parents are attracted to them because of their look and their size, saying to themselves, "Oh, that would be perfect for my child. It's so cute!"

But have you ever tried a toy piano? While they may be cute and fulfill a need for a certain kind of toy and nursery furniture, they may leave much to be desired in terms sound and providing an instrument for musical development.

Let's see if the advantages of toy pianos outweigh the liabilities.

I've taught children who had toy pianos at first, and there is never any damage done, far from it, if a child plays a toy piano. I think they enjoy it simply because it makes pretty sounds. Anything that interests them in music and piano is good for their intellectual development.

But that is not our point today, but rather to see if there may be an alternative for toddlers that works better in providing a musical instrument adequate for musical development.

First let us enumerate the advantages of toy pianos:

1. They are attractive and this alone may interest the child in music.

2. They are inexpensive and portable

3. They have a standard keyboard setup with groups of two and three black keys.

4. They are mechanical devices, so you don't have to worry about electrical connections, outlets and safety issues.

5. The younger your child, the more appropriate a toy piano may be.

The only real alternative besides a real piano is the electronic music keyboard, such as the inexpensive Casio brands you see for around $99. You see them at Circuit City and electronic appliance outlets as such as that.

Here is a comparison of an electronic keyboard versus a toy piano:

1. Children's electronic music keyboards have real width keys, inch wide, while toy pianos often have "mini" keys to accommodate their tiny hands. It may be better to have the child get used to what real piano keys are like. On the other hand, anything that attracts your child to touch a musical keyboard is a good thing, correct width keys or not.

2. Electronic keyboards make a wide variety of sounds besides the standard piano sound of a toy piano. This may attract your toddler, or may confuse them. More sounds are available on a small keyboard but not usually on a toy piano, although undoubtedly there are products out there called "toy pianos" which make sounds in addition to something piano-like.

3. Toy pianos produce a sound made on what are usually small bell-like surfaces called "tines." It sounds more like chimes than a piano. An electronic keyboard's piano sound is usually very faithful to a real piano sound.

4. Electronic keyboards must be used with batteries to get around the safety issues of outlets, power cables and connections. Toy pianos usually are mechanical devices that require no power, and therefore have the advantage of safety and convenience.

Whatever choice you make, a toy piano can be a great introduction to music, which will eventually produce many benefits such as increased math scores and better handwriting.

Better to get a toy piano at first and then upgrade than not get started at all. Music skills develop at a very young age.

Customer Review: SAXOLOCO put on your dancin 'shoes
Im far from a Kenny G fan, but another late night comin home from a ballgame , another 6 innings at 3rd base gig, tired and on an adrenaline journey I had to wait 30 minutes, parked in my Metro Atlanta driveway! why?, this song reached out over WJZC and grabbed me by the collar sayin..."Hold on mon!! dis is a gateway tune!!! find out who this is, although Kenny's distinctive soprano sax shouldve alerted me. Gateway indeed, up temp and pleasantly surprising moving me from that post game mood into a grab my babe, put on my dancin shoes, and Brasilia, here we come!!! I could care less about the criticisms, the minutia or esoterica, by other reviewers of more "refined" jazz tastes.... these songs, individually, or collectively made me feel good, perhaps its cause my babe/lady/ wife is lightly latin and these songs got me ready to move n groove... SAXOLOCO was the door opener for a pleasently refreshing, mood enhancing experience for me/us.... Hey isnt dat what de moosic spose to do bro!!!! garmankirk
Customer Review: GREAT CD
I bought this CD for my parents who love to ballroom dance. THEY LOVED THIS CD!!!!!!

Gharana essentially means a school of thought, or a school of music, that follows a particular style perfected over the years by rigorous practice and enhanced by coming generations that combine contemporary styles and incorporate new ideas. Gharana literally means family tradition, members of a family of musicians establishing their own unique musical discipline consistently over three or more generations. It is difficult to give an exact date when this system came into being. Ithawa gharana has evolved over seven generations of some of the finest sitar players of India. Shujaat Khan is seventh in this unbroken chain of sitar virtuosi from Ithawa gharana and is considered to be the torch bearer for the future of this school of music. With Shujaat Khan in concert today, it would be appropriate to bring forth some of the hidden facts about the history and evolution of this style of music.

Ithawa gharana in its present form owes its existence, its popularity and its distinctive style of sitar playing to Shujaat Khans father, the legendary musician Ustad Vilayat Khan. But for him, the gayaki ang or vocal style in instrumental music, which is the hall mark of this gharana, would neither have existed nor would have flourished. To talk about Ithawa gharana of recent years is to talk about Vilayat Khan and his early period of musical training, his original thoughts about bringing gayaki in instrumental playing, his improvisations and changes made to the structure of sitar to accommodate the continuity of sound or to imitate vocals in sitar playing. It is believed that only after Vilayat Khans tantalizing performance that won the hearts of the listeners, critics and musicians alike, at the 1943 Vikram Samaroh music conference in Bombay, instrumental music earned a wider acceptance in the main stream classical music.

Born in 1928 in Gauripur, East Bengal, Vilayat Khan entered the world of music at an early age of four and gave his first performance when he was eight. He also made his first recording at the same age. Vilayat Khan hails from an impressive family of musicians. His great grand father Ustad Sahabdat Khan gave todays surbahar, the bass version of the sitar and a very difficult instrument to master, its present tonal and structural form. At the early age of ten Vilayat Khan lost his first guru, his father Ustad Inayat Khan, a leading instrumentalist of his days. Thereafter he moved with his mother to the state of Nahan near Delhi to learn music from his maternal grand father Ustad Bande Hasan Khan, who was the court musician of the state. During 40s and 50s there still was Inayat Khans influence in Vilayat Khans playing. Tantrakari was still very prominent. The right hand which is considered as the main subject of instrumental playing for string instruments was still distintly dominant. Tantrakari had been taken to great heights by earlier generations but now was the time to give new direction to instrumental music. It is believed that human voice is the sublime epitome of expression and all other sounds are subordinates used only for enhancing and ornamenting the vocal music. In his quest to achieve vocal continuity in the sound of sitar, Vilayat Khan introduced the gayaki ang in instrumental music during the early 60s.

Khayal ras, a vocal music style with imaginative use of lyrics, began to emerge in instrumental music with Vilayat Khans introspective vision and vivid imagination. The tone of sitar was now changed. The right hand remained at its place but there were significant advancements in the left hand. The pancham of kharaj was now replaced with a steel gandhar (this change helps in establishing the mood of the raag). Several other fundamental changes were also made to the structure of sitar.

There were various subjects involved in khayal ras which required ample improvisations in order to translate it in instrumental music. At first Alap, the slow but contemplative progression of a raag, was given a different approach adorned with meend, krintan and zamzama. Next were taans and bol taans, the fast tempo phrases, and thumri. The transition towards khayal ras is quite evident in Vilayat Khans recordings from 60s onwards.

Gayaki ang is now successfully passed on to Ithawa gharanas next generation of musicians. Today there are many musicians who prefer and follow this style of music. Thanks to his creative genius for this enormous contribution to the world of music. It would be righteous to refer to Ithawa gharana as Vilayatkhani gharana.

Customer Review: Fantastic
This DVD along with Live and Off the Record are simply fantastic. Shakira is the whole package from the voice of an Angel to a body...well, that's out of this world!! How could you not love this goddess!!!!!
Customer Review: Bought it for the price. Ended up liking it.
It was available for less than fifteen so I picked it up. I liked Shakira's first major Spanish album before her international success. I hadn't really listened to her newer stuff. When I put it in I was pleasantly surprised. The visuals are great and the sound is even better. To be honest I do skip a few songs whenever I watch it but I still consider it a good purchase for the price.

Today you will learn the melody to the old song Tom Dooley on your guitar. You will also learn to read tab notation which will help you learn melodies on your guitar without knowing how to read sheet music!

Here are the lyrics to the first verse:

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

Hang down your head and cry

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

Poor boy, you're bound to die

As I mentioned you will use tablature notation that will tell you what string to play and what fret to press down. Take a look at the following tab staff:

1. --------------------

2. --------------------

3. --------------------

The three lines represent the first three strings on your guitar. The first string or the E-string is the string with the highest pitch. The numbers placed on the strings in the following melody will tell you which fret to press down.

Now it is time for you to play the first part of the melody. Here is the guitar tablature notation together with the first line of lyrics:

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

1. -----------------0--0--

2. --------------1--------

3. --0--0--0--2----------

Time for the next tablature staff and lyrics:

Hang down your head and cry

1. ---------------------

2. --------------1--3--

3. --0--0--0--2--------

Try to use your left index finger to press down the notes on the first fret, your middle finger to press down the second fret and your ring finger for the third fret!

Time for the next line!

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

1. --------------------------

2. ----------------1--3--3--

3. --0--0--0--2------------

Try to learn this melody by heart by playing one line at a time. Knowing melodies by heart will make them accessible whenever you will find a guitar around!

Here you have your last guitar tablature!

Poor boy, you're bound to die

1. ---------0------------

2. --3--3-----1-----1---

3. ---------------2------

An ordinary guitar tablature staff consists of six lines representing the six string. You will find many sites on the Internet with this type of tabs!

Peter Edvinsson invites you to download your guitar tablature, free sheet music, ebooks, music lessons and read his sheet music blog at Capotasto Music

The August Sessions

The exceptionally talented Jazz group Weather Report have released their CD entitled Heavy Weather. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Weather Report fans, and Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Heavy Weather their artistic excellence is on full display as they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be their best work to date.

I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Heavy Weather. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Heavy Weather is a nicely varied, mix of 8 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. Theyre all here.

Listen to this CD and I believe youll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and this is clearly the work of a group of musicians in top form. So much so that if you're even mildly into Jazz music you'll enjoy this CD.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - A Remark You Made, track 5 - Rumba Mama, and track 8 - Havona.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Birdland. This is a great track!

Heavy Weather Release Notes:

Weather Report originally released Heavy Weather on September 23, 1997 on the Legacy Recordings label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Birdland 2. A Remark You Made 3. Teen Town 4. Harlequin 5. Rumba Mama 6. Palladium 7. Juggler, The 8. Havona

Weather Report: Joe Zawinul (vocals, piano, synthesizer, melodica); Jaco Pastorius (vocals, fretless bass, mando-cello, drums, steel drums); Manolo Bandrena (vocals, percussion); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Alex Acuna (drums, percussion).

Recorded at Devonshire Sound Studios, North Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by John Ephland.

MUSE - Drawn In - Red T-shirt

Brand New, never worn 100% cotton front print Authentic MUSE T-shirt.

I do not even know you. I have never met you. You do not know me, yet I will bet that I know something about you. And it is this. You love music with a message. Yes, you do, You cannot deny it. All your life, you have always loved music with a message. So today, I write this article about all music with messages. Over the years that I have listened to music, I have found that music messages make people cry. But that is okay. You will cry for many reasons , and perhaps the best of that is when you cry tears of joy or tears of feeling, the feelings that your words are in that song, perhaps your own message is right there in that song. And perhaps not, perhaps the song is about your friend, your relative, your co-worker, pehaps you hear a song, and you immediately think of someone you know. And perhaps you might think that you might like to know someone like that. Whatever the reason that you love music with a message, this is your own reason.

I write here to day to list some songs with messages, some songs of joy, and other songs of sadness, but every song is the same in that EACH has its own message. Try these songs, and I guarantee you will be moved to tears,to joy, to sadness, to laughter, to stillness, to being stunned, and to being and feeling every bone, spirit, and molecule in your body, but you will feel. These are the songs that make you feel human, and that remind you that you are part of the human race and though we are all different, we are more alike than you know.

Here is my list of moving songs:

  1. What is Truth? Johny Cash
  2. Phantom 309 Red Sovine
  3. Imagine Beatles
  4. I Hope You Dance Lee Womack
  5. Time Enya
  6. The Impossible Joe Nichols
  7. Letters From War
  8. I Am Woman Helen Reddy not sure of the spelling here , add comments
  9. American Skin Bruce Springsteen
  10. Dance With My Father Luther Van Dross
  11. Speechless Michael Jackson
  12. Butterflies Michael Jackson
  13. I Believe I Can Fly R. Kelly
  14. Who Am I
  15. Ebb Tide
  16. Amazing Grace by anyone
  17. Black Bird The Beatles
  18. In My Daughter's Eyes Martina McBride
  19. How Far Martina McBride
  20. Up Pink or Shania Twain -- Honestly , I forgot who sang this song but it is totally awesome
  21. The Star Spangled Banner
  22. Savage Garden
  23. Daniel
  24. Moon River
  25. The Warrior Is A Child Twila Paris
  26. Lazarus Carman
  27. This is My Bible Carman
  28. Eye of The Tiger
  29. You Are The Key To My Heart Boyzone
  30. I Will Survive
  31. He Al Hibler
  32. La Bamba
  33. Our Father Carman
  34. No Matter What Boyzone
  35. I Love How You Love Me not sure, I tihnk it is Boyzone but probably some other singer ; you can leave a note if you know the name
  36. Everything I Own Bread
  37. To Everything There Is A Season sorry, forgot the singers here
  38. Always Shania Twain
  39. New York, New York Franky!
  40. Dancing Queen Abba
  41. What is Truth Johnny Cash YES, I know that song is on the list twice!

There are hundreds of messages in songs and hundreds of songs that have a real, touching message. Some are strong, some are sad, some are joyful, and others leave you wondering. What is your song. I would love to have everyone comment on what their favorite song with a message is. And if you feel free enough tell me why you like the song; what does it mean to you?

Heavy Denver

You might think abstractly of tvfordogs as "the next Foo Fighters." But that would be to sell this ground-breaking outfit short of their place in the pantheon of compelling British rock acts. Although you might hear enticing snippets of Dave Grohl or Coldplay in the alchemy, you'll soon detect an undeniably personal view of our postmodern world. And you'll drop your drink. And then you'll be along for the ride.
Customer Review: Fabulous C.D
Brilliant album, definately worth buying.Watch out for Mark Homer, he's an amazing bass guitarist and the most talented of the group. I love this band, they rule my life!! Great.
Customer Review: Buy buy buy
This album simply rocks, but its not the typical 'rockers' album. Album incorporates, a lot of 'groove' ('FAQ') and accessibility to tracks without the yawn of predictability that's found in popular music today. Then there are surprising moments like 'Emergence', where intense but subtle classical influences bring a trance-like ebb to the flow of poetic lyricism and and hard jammin' guitar. Neil Luckett's vocals are compelling and refreshing. Just get it!

Trawling through one internet music recording forum after another (as I often do) is certainly illuminating. The multitudinous posts from earnest recordists enquiring from the experts which microphone, preamp, soundcard, converters, compressor, EQ, reverb - blah, blah, blah - is better than another have a rather dulling effect on my sensibilities before too long. And in truth, I've begun to make a bit of a nuisance of myself at one or two places by interjecting with a recommendation that the poster look to the room before he batters his credit card in the hope that some sparkling new high-end "professional" piece of gear will solve all his recording issues. Sometimes the repost comes back claiming that the initial poster is a hobbyist and is not aspiring to achieve professional results - so why don't I just back off and let the guy/gal spend his/her money the way that he/she sees fit? That's all very well, but it doesn't gainsay the logical flaw in spending in the region of $2k on gear when a similar amount - or much less with a bit of research and DIY - on some acoustic treatment of the recording space would achieve a whole different order of improvement.

At this point I should perhaps confess that it took about a year for me to reach the same conclusion. There's no question that a sexy new microphone with a price tag to suit is far more appealing than buying bags of mineral wool slabs, or even proprietary, pretty looking, sound treatment products. I should also admit that I did read a whole lot online about ways and means, materials and products, and earnest debates between the experts - not all uncontroversial - before I felt confident about doing something about it in my own place.

Most - nearly all - of what I have learned I have learned through advice freely given by experts on internet forums concerned with recording studio construction and acoustics. There are some wonderful step-by-step instructions out there on how to make excellent DIY acoustic treatment solutions that are about as effective as, and at fraction of the cost of, commercial products. There are also detailed explanations available on the causes of problems encountered when recording acoustic instruments in small(-ish) rooms - a rudimentary understanding of which is essential to finding solutions for your own particular room.

Following some of that advice has lifted a veil from my recordings and has enabled me to deliver professional sounding projects resulting in a CD - and sales! So I won't apologise now for my evangelising about the topic whenever I get the opportunity - such a difference has acoustic treatment made to my own projects.

Hobbyist or not, you're better off recording in a field with the cheapest of gear than in most untreated rooms with the most expensive recording equipment on the planet.

So there!
