Guitar Tablature - Learn To Play Tom Dooley

Today you will learn the melody to the old song Tom Dooley on your guitar. You will also learn to read tab notation which will help you learn melodies on your guitar without knowing how to read sheet music!

Here are the lyrics to the first verse:

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

Hang down your head and cry

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

Poor boy, you're bound to die

As I mentioned you will use tablature notation that will tell you what string to play and what fret to press down. Take a look at the following tab staff:

1. --------------------

2. --------------------

3. --------------------

The three lines represent the first three strings on your guitar. The first string or the E-string is the string with the highest pitch. The numbers placed on the strings in the following melody will tell you which fret to press down.

Now it is time for you to play the first part of the melody. Here is the guitar tablature notation together with the first line of lyrics:

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

1. -----------------0--0--

2. --------------1--------

3. --0--0--0--2----------

Time for the next tablature staff and lyrics:

Hang down your head and cry

1. ---------------------

2. --------------1--3--

3. --0--0--0--2--------

Try to use your left index finger to press down the notes on the first fret, your middle finger to press down the second fret and your ring finger for the third fret!

Time for the next line!

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley

1. --------------------------

2. ----------------1--3--3--

3. --0--0--0--2------------

Try to learn this melody by heart by playing one line at a time. Knowing melodies by heart will make them accessible whenever you will find a guitar around!

Here you have your last guitar tablature!

Poor boy, you're bound to die

1. ---------0------------

2. --3--3-----1-----1---

3. ---------------2------

An ordinary guitar tablature staff consists of six lines representing the six string. You will find many sites on the Internet with this type of tabs!

Peter Edvinsson invites you to download your guitar tablature, free sheet music, ebooks, music lessons and read his sheet music blog at Capotasto Music

The Romantic Gift of Dance

From the beginning of time, dance has been a societal activity. Dancing in groups was popular and dances were open, no close proximity touching of partners. In the nineteenth century, about 1880, a dance, the tango, emerged in Buenos Aires. It was born in the poor areas and brothels of the city and made its way gradually into the upper class homes of the rich. Argentina was a very rich country and many of its inhabitants had vacation homes in Paris and London. They took the tango with them when they went abroad.

The origin and meaning of the word tango appears to have come from an African word. Its translation by Europeans and others in the Americas was "a closed space where Negroes gather to dance" and then later the name of the dance.

The tango that was born in the brothels of Argentina had overt sexual undertones and many considered it vulgar. As it moved from class group to class group, the dance changed. The main ingredient of the dance, the connection between the two partners, did not change. It evolved into a more sensuous, acceptable form in society. If you watch ballroom dancing competitions, you will see the tango performed by the contestants. This is a diluted version of the dance.

Dancing itself is a romantic activity. When you dance, you are in close proximity of your partner. You move for and with each other. A truly romantic gift for Valentine Day is Argentine Tango lessons for the two of you. After you have learned the dance, create a romantic setting for the two of you:

  • Create an invitation for your loved one, inviting them to dinner and dance.
  • Purchase a CD of your favorite tango music.
  • Prepare a meal of their favorite food.
  • Add candles and flowers to the table.
  • Use your best china, silverware, and crystal.
  • Push back the furniture in the living room for dance space.
  • Eat your romantic dinner.
  • Dim the lights.
  • Work off your romantic dinner by dancing the Argentine Tango.
  • End your evening of romance in a way that suits the two of you.

The Argentine Tango is one of the most sensuous and romantic dances in the world. Each partner must concentrate and focus on the presence, the body, and the emotions of their partner. They must feel each other. The Argentine Tango is a dance in which the partners can express their desire and longing for each other.

What a truly wonderful romantic gift for Valentine Day or any time of the year.

Music Therapy: Can Music Really Soothe The Savage Beast?

It has long been suggested that music soothes the savage beast. But is this true? And if it is, does this have any implication where humans are concerned? The answer, apparently, is yes. To illustrate this, researchers point to the different physiological changes that take place within the human body in response to different sounds and noises. A loud noise that shatters the silence sets the human heart racing and stimulates a rush of adrenaline that prepares you for flight. In contrast a soft, soothing sound helps us to relax.

Music therapy has, in fact, been around for thousands of years. Nearly four thousand years ago the Hebrew Scriptures recorded that the boy who would later become King David was hired by his predecessor to play the harp to calm King Saul when he would go into a rage. Likewise, the use of music therapy is found in the writings of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome.

More recently, scientists have been studying the effects of music therapy and have documented changes in respiratory rates, blood pressure, and pulse in response to musical stimuli. Likewise, researchers in the realm of music therapy have found that the use of music therapy can be effective in areas as diverse as IQ and recovery rates, pain management and weight loss.

Some object that this sounds too good to be true. How can music therapy change something like pain management? Researchers tell us that the reason music therapy works is based on how we hear. Sound is little more than vibrations in the air that are picked up by the inner ear and transferred to the brain which is a key component in your nervous system and controls the functions of the body and the brain responds to the stimuli that it is given.

In light of this, music therapy can and often is used in a wide variety of applications. One common application for music therapy is in working with autistic individuals because research has found that music can help autistic children to express themselves. Likewise, music therapy has been found to help individuals with physical disabilities to develop better motor skills.

With music therapy, individuals with high levels of anxiety can be helped to express suppressed emotions thereby discharging anger, or enabling the individual to express the joy they would not otherwise be able to express. Likewise, research has found that music therapy can help lower the anxiety levels of hospital patients who find themselves facing frightening prospects and in an unfamiliar environment. Furthermore, music therapy has been found to help medical professionals with pain management such that they have been able to reduce pain medication by as much as one half by helping to stimulate the production of the bodys own pain killers, called endorphins.

Music therapy can come is a wide variety of forms. In some cases its as simple as having the individual listen to particular music. In other cases music therapy requires a more interactive approach, having the individual respond to the music either in dance or using some other form of expression. But in its many forms, music therapy has often been found to be beneficial.

Miami Florida - 7 Months of Cool Things to Do in a Hot Town

Miami, Florida has been a favorite tourist destination for many decades. Its pleasant weather through the year brings people down in droves to enjoy a kick back outdoor lifestyle and enough activities to keep them busy 24/7. When you go to Miami, if you want, you can mix a dose of culture with your fun on the beach and your partying in the clubs.

There are a number of annual events in South Beach and other parts of the city that provide entertainment for everyone.

February

When most of the rest of the United States is freezing in late February you might want to pack your bags and head down to the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. It takes place at different locations in the South Beach area and raises money for the Florida International University hospitality program.

So, you'll be enjoying fantastic food prepared by celebrity chefs as well as local cooks doing cooking demonstrations. You'll also be tasting wine, and you'll be contributing to a good cause. Life doesn't get much better.

March

You'll want to hit the Irish pubs and enjoy Irish food, Irish music, and Irish libations in Miami when everyone celebrates St. Patrick's Day.

If you're into electronic and dance music, hit South Beach for the Winter Music Conference, which attracts DJs as well as musicians. You can also get an education on the music business at seminars during the conference. Just into partying and dancing? They're all around you at Lummus Beach, local parks and local clubs.

Want a break from partying but don't want to necessarily get too heavy? The Miami International Film Festival spans ten days and showcases films from local filmmakers as well as filmmakers from around the world in a variety of different genres. It's held in various venues around the city.

July

The Fourth of July is another fantastic time to be in Miami. Each Independence Day celebration brings live music at Bayfront Park along with fireworks.

August and September The International Ballet Festival began in 1995 and it's been taking center stage at different venues, including the Jackie Gleason Theater, during August and September. A lot of extraordinary dancers are involved. It's presented by the Miami Hispanic Ballet Company and has received acclaim throughout the media and is appreciated by everyone.

October The International Caribbean Music Festival, held in Bicentennial Park, is an event that celebrates one of the many cultures that makes Miami what it is. You'll love the mood and the music that's performed by musicians from throughout the Caribbean.

December A rather unusual event, the King Mango Strut, takes place shortly after Christmas. It's a parade that's a parody of the Orange Bowl Parade and current events. It follows a route down Main Avenue and Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. Catch it if you can.

Promoting Your Business On Facebook Properly

Of course the colossal media attention that Facebook has received - and it's absurd valuations - coupled with the increasing number of member has certainly been a pull for all sorts of businesses to harness the platform, but the question is? How are they? And how are you - and your business - harnessing Facebook pages?

Have you just reactively just thrown up a Facebook profile without really thinking strategically about what you really want to gain from it? And are you aimlessly collecting friends with no real clue as to how to get these members to your website?

The Facebook business pages go in some way to organise the range of business that currently have traditional profiles by offering an easy to manage template where business owners can include their address, logo and contact details - and best of all they're free and easy to set up.

These pages are, in my opinion, far sleeker than the "teenage" bedroom walls of traditional pages - with the added difference that "Friends" are in fact "Fans" who are available to post reviews, comments, photos and comments about the company.

But benefiting from Facebook pages is not about just throwing a profile up, so before glancing over the 'how to' guide, ask yourself, "why do I need a Facebook page?" Is it for increased visibility? And if so, how do you propose to attract and keep these customers? Or is the objective to be more customer-centric by listening to their recommendations and criticisms in order to add value to your business? And if so, do you have the resource to manage this strategy effectively?

Whilst any tentative approach into arenas like Facebook are of course likely to allow one to learn from their mistakes, something has to be said for missing an opportunity to be great, to capture the attention of your customers once and have them be 'fans' for eternity.

The following five steps explain how to get started:

1. Visit http://www.facebook.com/business/?pages and click on the "Create a page" button

2. You'll then be presented with a range of categories including "Local", "Business / Product" or "Artist, Band, or Public Figure". Pick the category applicable for your business.

3. On this same page, either the name of your business, product or artist name and click the "Create Page" button.

4. At this stage, you'll be presented with a template which you'll need to populate with your business information. A short description, web address, contact details and a company logo is a good place to start, which you can include by clicking on the "Add Information" link at the top of the page.

5. Once you are happy with how your page is looking, click back to the 'Add Information' page and click on the "Publish this page" link. (You page will not be accessible by the Facebook community until you do this).

Now, you've got your basic Facebook page you're a third of the way there... and whilst in this article I won't discuss promoting your profile or recruiting friends I will instead brainstorm a few ideas as to how you can add value to your page by encouraging users or 'prospective' fans to interact with you and your business - this is, after all, "Social" media.

Let's say, for instance, that my client is a local produce company that sells via its central Brighton retail premises in addition to having concessions in a number of farm shops and cafes. Their online sales are increasing steadily, particularly its hampers at Christmas time, however with competition from the major supermarkets they really want to step up they 'local' exposure online. They known their produce is far superior than that of their competitors, but they just need an avenue to communicate this to both their existing and prospective customers.

They've already ventured into Facebook (as just one tool in their arsenal) but this has had limited success, they now want to know how they can 'use' their Facebook page to increase awareness and ultimately drive traffic into the shop and the website. My advice would include:

Add value to your page:

Adding 'value' or 'usefulness' to your page is essential in order to increase the time spent on your page and ensure your 'Facebook fans' return to it. A worst case scenario would be that prospective users, on their first visit to your Facebook profile merely decide to become a fan without ever actually engaging. Think about consumption.

The Produce Shop could include extensive details of where their retail shop is located, including a map and a link to a section of their website where they've highlighted the nearest train and bus station and the best place to park.

They could go further to include their opening times, their telephone number and web address, details of new products that have come into the shop this week, special offers, local events they recommend, short interviews with local producers and farmers, an up to date news feed of what's happening in Sussex and the regular posting of photos both in the shop, at local farms, at food fayres and school fates. This added value needn't all be 'one way' either.

Allow and Encourage Participation:

Whilst we are aware of the large collection of users and vast number of groups within Facebook it more difficult to predict how users will interact with these groups, but it's safe to say that with any communicative means, interaction and participation is likely to merit the more valuable response.

The Produce Shop could ask users to submit their own images of what "Local" means to them, or perhaps photographs of particular meals they have cooked with local produce including the recipe. This idea could be expanded by staging a "Facebook" competition, to win, say a hamper, whereby users are encouraged to submit photographs and 'get involved'.

Posting 'thought' provoking points for discussion such as "Is Tesco right to compete on price with battery Chickens?" will encourage users to post their feelings within your profile as well as check back for follow up comments.

In this way, the 'fans' (of your brand, product or service) become an active community.

Post a 'Facebook' event:

There is nothing like a good wine and cheese evening, but how about extending this and having a late night opening of the shop and offering customers a tasting session of a range of local cheeses and wines. The Produce Shop could post a 'Facebook' event about this evening, which would then be shared to all of the group's members, who might in turn 'accept' or 'decline' their invitation. The beauty of this feature is that their decision will be posted within their 'mini feed' (a sort of list of what they have been doing on Facebook - viewable by their friends) which feature promotes the event.

Photographs of the evening (which could be doctored with a 'Produce Shop' logo could then be posted on the Product Shops Facebook page allowing users to tag themselves. Again, this is excellent for branding, and using free tool to your advantage.

Start a Facebook group:

Facebook allows members to start and join groups, ranging from all sorts of subjects and the produce shop could start a group, such as "I vow to Keep it Local" or "I love Sussex Produce" which might feature a lengthy description and photos on the excellent range of produce available within the region, where to buy it from and why it's important to think locally. The Produce Shop might wish to team up with other retailers, cafes and shops who can all promote this Facebook group, which might also venture offline as well as they all campaign for local product, whilst also championing their businesses.

But with any foray into social media you have to be prepared to listen to your customers, who might have both good and bad things to say about your business, your staff and/ or your products. Don't just burry you head in the sand or delete any negative comments; instead use this to your advantage.

If a user was complaining -at length- that their Christmas hamper didn't turn up until the New Year as a result of an administration error then this is an idea opportunity to post a response asking for them to contact you, or perhaps offer your apologies and promise to send them a gift voucher or a complimentary bottle of Sussex wine.

Demonstrate that you care about your customers; you are prepared to listen and make the necessary amendments to ensure complaints are minimised by tackling the root of the problem. If you have failings within your business, then you can guarantee your customers will point them out, but by being seen to listen to your customers, the perception of your brand will be heightened, over competitors who are busy burying their heads in the sand.

In conclusion Facebook pages can:

- Heighten Brand Awareness

- Create Brand Evangelists

- Provide Valuable Customer Feedback

- Widen the potential pool of prospective customers

- Increase Sales (offline and online)

It is just about taking that first step, that first foray into social media and engaging with users...... your efforts WILL be reciprocated.

The Waltz

The Waltz is the epitome of elegance and grace. When you watch two people dance the Waltz in competition, they look as if they are from another time; the men dressed in tails, the women in beautiful gowns. As they spin around the dance floor, they look as if they are floating on air.

The Waltz first became popular in Vienna in the 1780's. It's interesting to note that the position of the Waltz; each partner holding the other in close contact, was considered vulgar, and even sinful, by parents and religious leaders of the day. In a time when the most common formal dances were those such as the Minuet, a choreographed dance where the only contact was occasional hand-holding, the Waltz was utterly shocking. Even as late as the mid-1800's, some newspapers printed opinion pieces warning parents of the Waltz being observed in their city. Of course, this controversy only served to increase the Waltz's popularity among young people in love.

Today, of course, the Waltz is a dance that is cherished for its loveliness. It's a dance that is easily modified to be a formal or casual dance. The Waltz is equally appropriate between two people madly in love on a moonlit night as it is between a father and daughter or a grandmother and grandson at a family gathering.

The Waltz is a dance you will use for the rest of your life. The Waltz will never go out of style, out of season or out of fashion. It is a dance that is equally as useful when you are 20 as when you are 80. Being a tempo-friendly dance, once you know the basic steps, the Waltz is easy to modify to whatever music is playing.

When learning to Waltz, one of the first things both the man and the woman need to get used to is to lead and to follow. In the modern world, men aren't used to being in charge of directing a woman's movements, and women aren't used to being directed. We live in a society of cooperation between the genders, without one having more control over the other. Giving and giving up control can be a sticking point at first while we find our places. To make this quicker to overcome for both the man and the woman, it's easier to think of the Waltz as a dance of cooperation rather than control. When a man indicates to his partner that they are moving in a certain direction, anything other than cooperation will end up as a mess. Cooperation, however, will bring out the beauty and grace of both partners.

Whether you want to learn to Waltz for a specific event such as a wedding or anniversary, or you've just always wanted to learn the Waltz, you can learn it much more quickly than you may think. In just a few lessons, you and your partner can be spinning around the dance floor like you've been dancing the Waltz together for years.

Want to learn to dance? Wish you could move your body confidently on the dance floor? Or would you just like to have a great excuse to get out and meet people? Well for all of the above come and visit Dance Vogue where professional dancer and teacher Natalie Beck show you how to take the next step.

Is Tupac Shakur Dead or Alive?

This is ultimately the question I am most frequently confronted with - is Tupac dead, or alive? Personally, I believe It all comes down to how you see death, and what YOU believe.

To cut things short, in my honest opinion, I believe Tupac is dead. A lot of people breeze over that though, and thats what the problem is. By saying he is dead, we are suggesting he is no longer alive - he no longer physically exists. But just because he doesnt exist as a physical form, a solid being, doesnt mean hes not here, right? Through Tupacs touching lyrics and music, he reached out to us, and communicated with us. Thats what he was best at. As long as we still listen to his music, his words, he will still touching us and communicating with us. So even after Tupac passed away, his music still remains - his essence still burns in our hearts. Remember, this is just what I believe. Death is a concept, depending on how you interpret it and what you believe, you may think differently. It will be great to hear your thoughts and opinions on this.

So why the Seven Day Theory? One thing Tupac was known for, was his intelligence. No, I dont mean he had outstanding grades at school. A lot of people mis-interpret the word intelligence. Knowledge is what is what one knows. Intelligence is ones ability to know. Tupacs ability to understand was immense. Just by listening to his lyrics, you can tell he was a deep thinker. He was a sensitive young male, who tried so hard to understand why things happened. But unfortunately, when trying to understand death all one is faced with is pain, and anxiety. Tupac wasnt necessarily scared of dying, but of being forgotten.

A lot of people are worried about death, but really I think they are worried about being forgotten. So many memories just erased in an instant. The only possible remedy would be to engrave those memories and stories into his songs, and then create a mystery which baffles the world for years to come. It makes sense doesnt it? Tupac was so intelligent, he would have had the ability to predict this. He would have known by leaving so many clues and hints in his lyrics, and by creating the Seven Day Theory, the world even to this day will be listening to his words in hope.

If this idea was true, it would explain just about everything - apart from the actual shooting itself. Now assuming Tupac died on September 13th 1996, we are left with two possibilities: Tupac was murdered, or he planned his death. Once again, your thoughts are welcome on this. But my personal opinion, is that Tupac planned his death. For someone living in such pain and suffering (according to his lyrics), it wouldnt be hard to give in to death, if it meant he would be perceived as a legend for decades to come. Tupac once said in an interview that he shouldve blown his brains out a long time ago. It is clear that he wasnt afraid to die, and so maybe he was willing to exchange his life for a piece of history.

Remember, this is just what I believe. Everyone has their own thoughts and views regarding Tupacs death. Maybe he is chilling on an island somewhere smoking a blunt. Or perhaps he really was murdered straight.
