"If you die your son will be like us. Fatherless." From a film-makers point of view, this film is a daunting task. It has many characters but still grasps your attention. There are so many very good foreign language films nowadays. I thought Tsotsi was top notch and now, City of Men. I mean, wow! The characters in the film are young men involved in gangs, carefully woven in their anger and paranoid youth is a sense of dread and being doomed. Excellent drama. This is a must watch for anyone who's remotely interested. There will be a scene where you will laugh really really hard. There's a little kid in the film that you'll want to cuddle. You'll never want to live the character's life though. Also ... it actually made me think about something most men don't ever think of. It's about fatherhood. Before I become incoherent, I'll just end by saying, this film is going to do really well and is a must must watch. Thankyou for reading.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT FOLLOW-UP TELEVISION SERIES IN THE SPIRIT OF CITY OF GOD
This series does not follow the exact story or timeline as the movie City Of God but it takes place in Rio de Janeiro in the Favela. I was entertained and pleased with the acting, cinematography, and realness. I almost felt that I was there and I could have been there in my younger years.

Customer Review: Bought it for the price. Ended up liking it.
It was available for less than fifteen so I picked it up. I liked Shakira's first major Spanish album before her international success. I hadn't really listened to her newer stuff. When I put it in I was pleasantly surprised. The visuals are great and the sound is even better. To be honest I do skip a few songs whenever I watch it but I still consider it a good purchase for the price.

Customer Review: a review for Brasil '66 fans
It's been around 40 years since Mendes reached an artistic and commercial peak with several classic albums that successfully mixed bossa nova, jazz, and pop music. Those albums still sound fresh today, thanks to the terrific songs, latin rhythms and some sparkling arrangements. Since then, Mendes has experimented with mixing his Brazilian sound with folk rock, funk, dance music, hip hop, and on "Encanto," some r&b. As someone who prefers the work he did with Brasil '66 to anything more recent, to my ears the album is pleasant though generally forgettable with the exception of a few wonderful tracks. Unsurprisingly the best tracks are those with strong melodies by Antonio Carlos Jobim, in particular "Somewhere in the Hills" and "Dreamer," both of which are direct descendants of the sound of Brasil '66. "Dreamer" includes both Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, who sounds remarkably like she did when she was fronting Brasil '66. This is a genuinely stunning track and easily the best on the album. Natalie Cole sings "Somewhere in the Hills" which is appropriately jazzy and is one of Jobim's strongest melodies. Other Jobim tracks include "Waters of March" which Mendes has covered several times in the past. It's a singer's song, and sounds a little rhythmically stiff here, as it has in his previous efforts. "Morning in Rio" is also good, with a more Brazilian styled melody and a nice trombone solo. The rest of the CD is listenable, but not such that I ever want to hear most of it again. "The Look of Love" is an unnecessary remake of a good song. What made the original great was a sensational big band arrangement which has been dropped in favor of a hip hop arrangement. I liked the Brazilian styled funk of "Odo-ya" and the mellow "Catavento" with Mendes' wife on lead vocals. On the other hand, "Funky Bahia" and "Lugar Comum," the latter of which features an Italian rapper doing a little snippet of "Volare," are disposable pop/hip hop songs. If I could get into Mendes' head, I would try to convince him do an album of Jobim and Marcos Valle songs with Herb Alpert and Lani Hall and a small jazz/bossa combo. It might not sell a million copies, but it would be an artistic triumph. If you're an unreconstructed fan of Brasil '66 as I am, I can recommend this with reservations. You might be better off just downloading a handful of tracks. But "Dreamer" should not be missed.
Customer Review: Summery and enchanting.
"Encanto" follows the highly acclaimed 2006 collaboration with will.i.am Timeless and with this latest release, Sergio takes us even deeper into Brazil, having recorded all the basic tracks in Rio and Bahia and finally finishing up in in California, where the studio band included Alphonso Johnson. For "Encanto" (in Spanish for Enchantment), Mendes has also enlisted the formidable and enchantingly diverse talents of an array of guest musicians who hail from the world over. Latin superstar Juanes from Colombia and multi-talented Carlinhos Brown & Vanessa da Mata from Brazil jostle alongside the foremost Japanese pop group Dreams Come True, Belgium's Zap Mama and Italian rapper Jovanotti. This international cast is completed by the American stars Fergie, Siedah Garrett and Herb Alpert who is accompanied by his wife, original Brasil '66 singer, Lani Hall. Old smoothie Mendes gets jiggy on a selection of bossa-favourites with a raft of guest stars including the ubiquitous Will.i.am and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, Natalie Cole and Herb Alpert et all... This new album essentially is a cross between Mendes' soft, salsa-tinged melodies and modern day R'n'B. The opening track, "The Look of Love" with rap/vocals by Fergie, is a deliciously moreish funky-fusion, and for the first third or so, the combination of Sergio's Rhodes with the hip-hopped production style is terrific. Perhaps this new version of Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love", which Mendes had originally transposed to bossa nova heaven in 1967 is the boldest track on "Encanto". This new interpretation, produced by Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, preserves the alluring melody of the original while bringing the song into the new millennium with crisp drum programming and a sexy rap by Fergie. Then it goes all smooth jazz on you. Not bad, though. Whether you are a Sergio Mendes fan especially the earlier stuff, Brasil 66, Equinox, etc or a Black Eyed Peas fan, or indeed R&B then there's something on this album to please everyone. I'd say for such a challenging album there are only a couple of songs that are just to heavy hip hop for me. The rest is a joy to listen to, if you are open minded about remixes and love to see what Sergio has been up to. This album is a grower. The more I listen to it, the better it gets. You will like it. Typically, a wedding lasts about 15 minutes. However, some guests do arrive early to the reception. Therefore, be sure all reception to-dos are complete by the start time of the wedding. Also, all wedding vendors should be wearing proper attire for early arriving and late staying guests. All tables should be set-up including cake table, entertainments table, sign-in table, food tables, and tables with chairs for all guests. If you have a seating arrangement, all seating lists should be at the reception with everyones name with where they are sitting.

Introduction of wedding party

This step is not mandatory, but it is nice for everyone to know who the wedding party is as many have not met before your wedding. Create a Reception Planning Guide and give this to your master of ceremonies prior to your wedding. This details, among other things, the order of entrance into the reception site with their names and titles. The order of entrance is as follows: parents of the bride, parents of the groom, ushers with bridesmaids, flower girl and ring bearer, special guests, best man, maid/matron of honor, bride and groom. In addition, review the pronunciations of the wedding party's names with the master of ceremonies.

Introduction of bride and groom

This is always the last of the introductions. Everyone should stand before the bride and groom enter. In addition, a special song can be arranged with the music entertainment and a special announcement made to punctuate a true grand entrance. Also, inform the master of ceremonies how you would like to be introduced: Mr. and Mrs. Smith or John and Jane Doe.

Blessing

This is another step that is not mandatory, but for the religious couples makes a nice setting. If you invite the person who performed the marriage ceremony to the reception, I would recommend having them conduct the blessing. If they are not able to attend, a parent or family friend is a good idea. Lastly, the master of ceremonies could give the meal blessing. Be sure to communicate with whomever is giving the blessing in advance so they are prepared to give a personal touch.

Meal

It's time to eat! Bride and Groom, be sure to stop and take a moment to eat. This may be your only chance in the day. In addition, it is customary for the bride and groom to start the food line. Most guests know to wait until the bride and groom start the food line. So don't be late!

Cake Cutting

This is the traditional bride and groom making the first cut on their wedding cake. Then, the bride feeds half of the piece of cake to the groom and the groom feeds the remaining half to the bride. The cutting of the cake is a ceremony intended to symbolize the caring and sharing for one another. Forks may be used as they make the image very attractive for the photographer. Forks may also minimize the possibility of someone being hurt with the more playful squashing that sometimes happens.

Toasts

The toast is when the bride and groom toast each other then interlock arms and drink. Immediately following, the best man and maid/matron of honor make toasts to the bridal couple. Be prepared for other family and friends to follow with their toasts too.

Bride & Grooms First Dance

The Bride & Grooms Dance is the first dance between a bride and groom as a married couple. The dance is also commonly known as the "First Dance". The timing of the bride groom dance can vary in the evening based on your preferences. The first dance can be done immediately following the grand entrance with the wedding party circling the dance.

Father & Daughters Dance

The Father & Daughters Dance or the Father Bride Dance is the dance between the father(s) of the bride and the bride. Brides, if you have more than one father in your life, one can tap the other on the shoulder in the middle of the dance so you can dance with both of them. If you do not have a father, a common substitute is a father figure or even your brother would make a very nice gesture.

Mother & Grooms Dance

The Mother & Grooms dance is the dance between the mother(s) of the groom and the groom. The traditional tossing of the bouquet is when the bride tosses the bridal bouquet to all single women in attendance. Immediately following the bouquet tossing, a chair is set in the middle of the dance floor. The chair is for the bride to sit and the groom to remove the bride's garter from her leg. The traditional tossing of the garter is when the groom tosses the bride's garter to all the single men in attendance. The people whom catch the garter and bouquet are said to be the next one to marry.

Dancing and Fun

This is what you pay the music entertainment to do...get people to dance and have a good time. Give the music entertainment music examples and limitations of what type of music you want but dont give them a list of 100 songs they need to play.

Sonido Amazonico!

Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor the Incas distilled in the days before The Conquest, and the word's mysterious, boozy etymology makes it perfect for the musical style that bears its name. Chicha - the music - was spontaneously distilled during the culture clash of the '60s when the Indian population of the Peruvian Amazon blended Columbian cumbias with American rock & roll, particularly the twang heavy sound of surf music. With cheap electric instruments, Amazon Indians used the syncopated beat of cumbia as the foundation for melodies that sound to western ears like Andean folk music played on electric guitar supported by Tex-Mex style Farfisa. When the Indians moved to Lima, chicha became a thriving subgenre, but since the 70s the style has been dying out. Olivier Conan, owner of New York's Barbés nightclub and record label, discovered the music on a 2005 trip to Peru. In 2007, he put out a compilation called The Roots of Chicha. The music so captivated New York's downtown crowd that he put together Chicha Libre, a combo comprised of New York's musical scene makers, and started playing the old hits, and some new compositions, to packed houses. Part of the charm of the old chicha recordings had to do with their distorted, lo-fi approach, something that you can't match in a Manhattan recording studio. Nonetheless, Sonido Amazonico!, named after a hit by the chicha band Los Mirlos, is a sunny, upbeat collection guaranteed to bring a silly smile to your face. Vincent Douglas' plays a twangy guitar and Josh Camp plays a rare Hohner Electravox, an accordion-like instrument that sounds like a 70s Farfisa, anchor the band's timeless sound (the Electrovox is an electric hybrid; no air passes through it).

Like reggae, the chicha groove is so recognizable, and flexible, that almost any style of music can be played using it. The playing here has a lightness and humor that the originals lacked, but Chicha Libre's not making any claims about being authentic or keeping a lost tradition alive. Danny Rampling is a former British House Music DJ and is widely credited as one of the original founders of the UK's rave/club scene. His long career began in the early 1980s playing hip-hop, soul and funk around numerous bars and clubs in London. During a now legendary holiday in Ibiza in 1987, Rampling, along with fellow DJs Paul Oakenfold and Nicky Holloway, attended Amnesia, a then open air nightclub in San Rafael. At the club the group were introduced to the unique eclectic style of DJ Alfredo, playing, among other genres, the new house music that had been exported from the USA.

Upon his return to England, Rampling, along with his then wife, Jenny, attempted to recreate the Ibizan experience by promoting what is regarded as the UK's first Balearic rave club, Shoom. Shoom ran for 3 years, starting out at a gym in Southwark, London. It launched acid house culture virtually overnight, while simultaneously providing a basis for mass ecstasy use in the UK.

In the following years Rampling continued his career in music as a DJ and producer, remixing many UK and international acts while forming a band, The Millionaire Hippies. In November 1994 he joined the BBC, presenting the "Lovegroove Dance Party" on Radio 1 until March 2002, making it the second longest running dance music show in radio after Pete Tong's "Essential Selection".

The mid 1990's also saw Rampling's DJing style diversify. While still playing House and Garage sets, Rampling also began to headline at harder, trancier parties, e.g. 'South', at The Zap Club, in Brighton. Rampling himself referred to his newer style as 'Euro', and at this time showcased new Euro tracks, during the final thirty minute weekly mix of his Radio 1 Show. Additionally, Rampling's Double CD Love Groove Dance Mix featured House and Garage on the first CD, and 'Euro' on the second.

In 2005 Danny Rampling announced his retirement from DJing to concentrate on running his restaurant, however by 2007 this hiatus from the world of DJ'ing had been lifted by some on-off appearances at selected clubs.

Danny Rampling has decided to make his comeback by accepting many offers to DJ around the globe, He will be playing a special Twenty Years of House Summer Boat Party in London on Saturday 19th July 2008. Guitar and Rock music are inseparable and probably one of the main reasons for this is that most rock numbers or compositions have short or prolonger lead guitar solos. The lead guitar solos can be mastered by using different scales and guitar improvisation techniques like hybrid picking and legato technique.

There is such a huge variety of guitar improvisation techniques available that you can practice solos all your life and yet not find the end. It is infinite! One such guitar improvisation technique is called hybrid picking. Hybrid picking can add an absolutely new dimension to the sound that is rendered by your lead guitar. This is a type of guitar improvisation technique that is most commonly used by guitarists in music genres or styles like blues, rock, country, bluegrass, and even jazz. One of guitar legends who has used hybrid picking very effectively is Stevie Ray Vaughan. He used it for rendering a solo in Lenny Here's a small exercise in hybrid picking that you can try:

Hybrid picking is a guitar improvisation technique where you pick the guitar strings or chords using the fingers as well as the pick at the same time. The advantage is that you will be able to use your plectrum to play lead guitar that normally requires the fingerstyle mode of playing.

You will also be able to make wide string leaps like you can leap from the 5th string right to the 1st string, which can be quite a difficult exercise otherwise. To effectively use the hybrid picking guitar improvisation technique, you will need to your pick between your forefinger and thumb.

Legato Technique

The legato technique is another effective guitar improvisation technique that renders slurred notes quite similar to the notes rendered through hammer-on's and pull-offs. Here is a small exercise that includes some kick ass legato licks:

Legato guitar improvisation technique has been effectively used for solo performance by the likes of Joe Satriani, Alan Holdsworth, and Steve Vai. The above notes that form the legato technique will require you to hammer the notes without picking. You should ideally play this at 60bpm.

The most well known sport in Thailand is the Thai boxing or Muay Thai. It is a sport which needs a lot of strength, stamina and adaptability. It has a spiritual element too which is normally not linked with sports.

It is a form of combat between two fighters. Records show that this sport existed as early 1411, but it is possible that Muay Thai was in existence even before that. In 1920, Muay Thai was banned as it had become extremely violent and dangerous for the fighters. However, in 1937, the sport was revived and the fighters had to wear protective gear as the new rules and regulations that were laid down.

The spiritual aspect in Muay Thai can be seen before the sport starts. The fighters kneel down to pray to their wai kru or teacher before the event begins and they also perform a dance which is a bit of warm up besides being a ritual. This dance form is called Ram Muay. Ram Muay differs according to individual training camps. The dance is accompanied by music played by the band. The music is also known as phipat music.

The participant wears a tennis racket-like hoop on the head during the dance ceremony and then the coach removes it to indicate the start of the fight. Fighters wear bands containing a Buddha amulet and / or some kind of herb to bring good luck to them.

The actual boxing has five rounds and each round is for 3 minutes. There are three judges, who are seated in three different boxes on three different sides of the boxing ring. Points are given for each punch that lands on the opponent. In between the rounds, fighters can rest. Trainers use the rest as an opportunity to soak the fighters with water and advice them.

Muay Thai is considered to be a difficult sport and requires the fighters to be in peak physical condition.

On March 6th, Julieta Venegas recorded her MTV Unplugged at the Churubusco Studies in Mexico City, where she presented new songs besides interpreting some of her greatest hits in an intimate atmosphere to a live audience.

This production counts on important and interesting collaborations like two time Oscar winner, Gustavo Santaolalla, who accompanied her with the banjo and sang the chorus of the song "Algun Dia (Someday)". Brazilian singer, Marisa Monte featured in song "Illusion", a new and beautiful song that combines the Spanish and Portuguese language.

Also Mala Rodriguez joined Julieta and included a strong hip hop movement to the song "Eres Para Mi (You are for Me)", whereas the vocalist of Porter, Juan Carlos had a unique participation in "Algun Dia (Someday)".

In addition, the very talented Natalia Lafourcade comprised of the orchestra and played several instruments during the night, whereas the talented musician and composer, Jacques Morelenbaum accompanied Julieta on the cello in "De mis Pasos (From my foot steps)".

Many figure skating moves and techniques are based on ballet. Skaters who have a background in ballet should be able to transfer the positions and principles from ballet to skating. It is precisely this closeness to dance, and especially to ballet, that sets ice skating apart from any other sport. Although ballet and skating are similar, you have to think of them as two different worlds. There are many moves in skating that are similar to ballet, but you will have to break some ballet rules to get it right in skating.

The skater needs a strong core body to connect the upper and lower body for controlled powerful movements. He must be able to keep his shoulders over his hips throughout jumps, spins, footwork and edges. He must also be able to check his shoulders against his hips. Thus it is to the skater's benefit to become aware of the feeling of twisting in the middle of the torso, and also the feeling of staying square.

Figure skating and ballet require balance, strength in the legs, and ankle strength. They both use the same muscles, so ballet really helps figure skaters. Flexibility, balance, body alignment/posture, extension, and strength are just another reason to incorporate ballet to your figure skating. Many of the poses in skating are found in ballet, for instance arabesque, leaps, Rond de Jambe, Pli, etc. Ballet teaches the skater how to move the pelvis without losing balance or disconnecting the center in footwork sequences, including pirouette turns, jumps and leaps across the floor.

The entire foundation of ballet is poise and posture gained through core strength, making it the best way to learn how to present oneself and become graceful and elegant on the ice. Ballet helps with beauty and grace. Ballet dancers have a natural elegance in the way they carry themselves. The way their legs, back, arms, hands, feet, shoulders, and neck are aligned, always seems to have that flair grace. They have great posture.

Figure skating is ballet on ice. It can be one of the off ice training you implement to your skating for form and balance. Ballet uses body, mind and expression and while on the ice you have to express yourself as well. With ballet, you have a broader sense of how to perform, and to interpret and express your music as you tell your story or convey your emotion through the connecting steps of the program. This is what make the difference between a program that is all jumps with a lot of crossovers or stroking between the jumps, and a program that is interesting, artistic and pleasant to watch. Just as a dancer sweeps you away with her grace and flow and hides her/his sweat with a flourish, a skater will prepare you for a delicate show of artistry, acrobatic leaps and gentle arabesques.

The following is a brief summary of common terms and positions with which skaters should be familiar.

Rond de Jambe - A rotary movement of the leg.
It can be done in a number of ways, such as on the
floor with knee straight, or in air with a circular
rotation of the knee from bent to straight.

Pli - A bending of the knees with hips, legs, and
feet turned outward.

Arabesque - A position in which the dancer
stands on one leg with the other leg extended in a
straight line to the rear. The position of the arms
and the height of the raised leg may vary.
There are certain set positions in ballet for the
arms and particularly for the feet which give the
ballet dancer a particularly pleasing aspect as well
as providing a starting point for particular moves
and interchanges.
Skaters who have a background in ballet
should be able to transfer the positions and
principles from ballet to skating.

Foot Positions
There are five basic ballet foot positions that
are common to all teaching methods.
The feet point either in opposing directions either
in a straight line, or offset with one foot in front of
the other.

Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form that claims its source from Tamil Nadu, South India. Most of the sculptures in Hindu temples are based on Bharata Natyam dance postures known as karanas. In fact, it is the celestial female dancers or apsaras, who are depicted in many scriptures performing this heavenly dance, known on earth as Bharatanatyam. In the most essential sense, a Hindu deity is revered in royal opulence in his temple and offered a standard set of religious services called arotiks, among which are music and dance that are pleasing to the senses. Bharata Natyam as a dance form and carnatic music set to it are deeply grounded in the devotional mood, Bhakti. Bharata Natyam is said to be the embodiment of music in visual form and an offering of devotion.

Bharatanatyam is the manifestation of the ancient idea of the celebration of the eternal universe through the beauty of the material body.

The physical expressions express a poetic meaning known as Abinaya. It means that the emphasis is more on facial expressions than rhythmic movements. Abinaya is divided into four categories:

1. Angikabhinaya

2. Vachikabhinaya

3. Aharyabhinaya

4. Satvikabhinaya

Angikabhinaya : Expressing the meanings of lyrics through the body parts like Head, Hands, Legs etc.

Vachikabhinaya : Expressing the Story via a dance drama

Aharyabhinaya : Imitating the dresses, Jewellery, Make-up etc. in the dance.

Satvikabhinaya: Showing the devotional moods come under Satvikabhinaya.

Lord Shiva is said to be the embodiment of the 4 types of abinaya.

Kathak is a partly narrated dance form based on fast footwork (tatkar), spins (chakkar) and innovative use of the devotional moods in abhinaya. Today it's more of a form that has been practiced in the past by historical narratives, by kathakas or ancient bards, temple performances and the bhakti movement.

Kathak is an important classical dance in the culture of India, and an increasingly world popular theater art form. The word Kathak comes from katha, which means "pastimes-telling". 'Katha kahey so kathak kahaye', which means one who narrates a pastime through a dance form is a Kathak. Long ago, the performers of kathak known as Kathakars narrated stories in temples of North India. The movement of hands, body and facial expressions used by the Kathakars to enrich the narrative, has given birth to Kathak.

Accoring to history, the earliest reference of this art is found in the Mahabharata, the great epic poem spoken about five thousands years ago. At this early stage the art of Kathak was performed by a group of Brahmins in glorification of the lord.

Change in the Bhakti Era

During the period of fervent worship of Radha and Krishna, Kathak was used to narrate pastimes of these two eternal personalities. Popular performances included Sri Krishna's exploits in the holy land of Vrindavan, and pastimes of Krishna's mischiefs as a child.

Now most guys do not want to listen to techno because you are afraid your buddy 's going to catch you and ask if you want to glow stick dance. This is a good thing to at least try out if you embrace it oddly enough it works.

ASIA Latin Quartier 23rd November 1989 Music Poster




One of my favorite places to facilitate music-making and foster growth and social interaction is at an Alzheimer's center or assisted living community. As a music therapist I bring a different perspective and methodology to the group experiences at these locations than the usual invited entertainers or activity leaders. I have been asked to come back to visit the Alzheimer's center based on the fact that I involve the residents in active music-making and encourage interaction and self-awareness. Given these reactions, I want to explore and recommend some of the strategies I use when approaching a group of older adults with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

I say that these groups are some of my favorite clients to work with mainly because of the dramatic change in demeanor that occurs during the music activities. When I walk into a room full of thirty to forty residents and all I hear is the sound of silence, it is sometimes intimidating. In my experience it is kind of like being in a doctor's office waiting room where nobody talks to each other! This is a very sad situation for the residents because they see each other every day but just don't remember who their neighbor is or even where they are or why they are doing a certain activity. Then the "miracle" occurs during the music-making...

The residents literally begin stirring, lifting their heads, looking around, and moving their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music. Suddenly several people start singing words to the music and others begin playing tambourines and maracas that were laying in their laps. Smiles abound and laughter filters through the crowd. I love to see the recognition on faces when some of the residents realize that they are sitting next to someone, or when they are invited to dance by a caregiver! These events are short-lived, but I think incredibly powerful injections of humanity into a place and people that time forgot.

I keep the following ideas and strategies in mind when facilitating these groups:

1. Use a microphone -- I do not have a loud voice, so it is even more important that I use amplification, not only for my voice, but also for my guitar. Even with a microphone there will still be some who complain that they cannot hear very well. The sound of the live accompaniment should be strong and supportive whether it is from a guitar or a piano. I do not recommend using a digital keyboard, but a digital piano is just fine.

2. Use songs and music from the resident's young adult years -- Research with people who have Alzheimer's has shown that memory loss happens generally in retrograde fashion. It also seems that most people tend to have a connection with music especially from their teenage and young adult years. I currently use much music from the 1930's very successfully with my groups (i.e., Alexander's Ragtime Band, Side by Side, etc.)

3. Use song cards -- Make song cards with pictures on the front and the lyrics on the back. The song cards are a good visual to help cue the group about what they are singing. The song cards are also perfect for facilitating choice-making by individuals or the group.

4. "Pass the plate" -- Use something that necessitates interaction with your neighbor. I have used a big beach ball, a treasure box, or some other object that relates to a theme. Think of an item that is good for a show and tell. Pick a song or some recorded music that indicates that the object should move around the room. When the music stops, the person holding the item can choose a song or share a memory or story that comes to mind.

5. Themes -- Group activities built around thematic ideas are a perfect way to encourage reminiscing and discussion. Consider using holidays, seasons, news events and local traditions as the basis for the songs and music selections. One of my favorites is using the sun, moon and stars as a theme whenever the space shuttle takes off or there is an eclipse or meteor shower in the news. There are many songs that talk about the sun, moon or stars that the residents know and love!

6. Have a drum circle -- Community drum circles are appropriate for all ages and adaptable to almost any situation. The drum circle promotes group interaction and allows for individuals to be creative while participating at their ability level. Some clients will feel self-empowered by being drum circle facilitators. Please see my posts under the categories section for "drumming" for an extensive set of articles about how to use drum circles with groups who have disabilities.

7. Go with the flow! -- This concept may take some trial and error and experience, but planning is the key. Try to arrange the activities for the group experience into a contour of activity that begins and ends with less energy and has increased energy in the middle of the music session. The residents need time to wake up and begin feeling the music stimuli before they will be willing to dance and play instruments. It is also appropriate to help them return to a normal mental, emotional and physical energy state before stopping the group activities.

8. Shakers, drums and bells, oh my! -- Use as many different types of small percussion instruments that you can find so that everyone has something to make music with. Active music making is very important and cannot be left out. Playing instruments immediately changes the passive listener to a more focused participant who will be more likely to answer questions, make choices and provide spontaneous feedback.

9. Dance! -- Movement to music can also include dancing while sitting down. Props like scarves, ribbons, gloves and costume pieces are useful in cuing movement to music. Using recorded music for the activity can provide valuable time for you to personally interact with the group members.

10. Have fun! -- It will show, and your energy and excitement will be contagious.

I have used this CD for about 7 years as part of my prekinder bilingual curriculum, and it has been very successful with my students. Also, I know it is quality children's folk music because I have studied in detail children's folk music from Mexico, and most of these selections are easily validated as original folk music. YUK! I just recently started downloading mp3s and really screwed up when I bought this thinking it would be the Carlos Santana music I knew in the 60s. What else would "Ulitmate Santana" mean? Instead most of the album is just Santana accompanying some bozo singing stupid disco type songs. My bad. Remember, when it says "featuring so-and-so" it usually means you better like so-and-so and not care too much about who the titled performer is.
Customer Review: Great songs, but...
Carlos Santana has very few bad albums, or even bad songs. (Stay away from his collaboration with John McLaughlin though.) If you're looking for a one-disk compilation and are familiar with his later songs plus his late 60's hits, the songs here will be familiar. But... try Caravanserai, Borboletta, or some of his other unbelievable albums from "in between". If this is all you know of Carlos Santana, you have a lot to discover! What you hear on this disk is just an introduction. I give this review 4 stars rather than 5 not because there are bad songs on this CD (there aren't), but because you, as a Santana listener, deserve more.


Dancing is essentially a mood enhancer and a very good way to burn off some calories as well. But dancing on skates will require some great body balancing skills, and a lot more fun at that. Some popular workouts are jam skating, roller dancing and relaxing. With a pair of roller skates and some funky music, you could virtually invent your own style. If you do together in a group, there is no telling what you can come up with, especially if you put in some acrobatic maneuvers as well. Well, all in, it is just fun.

Through the years, skate dancing has evolved from one form to another. Its popularity has been like a roller coaster ride, sometimes reaching great heights and other times reached ebb. As most group roller skates dancing is done at roller links, its availability has clipped the popularity of roller dancing somewhat. With maintenance at an all time high, it is a sad fact that public roller rinks are shutting down with added frequencies. No matter what, roller dancing will always be a fantastic way for a group to excite themselves, and it will somehow live on, whether there are roller rinks or not.

Roller skates dancing are a great way to stay cohesive with your group of friends. It is very physical because you can see your friends, you can bump into them and you move your bodies in unison to the thumping music together. Contrastingly, you will not be able to sense that reality if you were to just network your friends through the internet! As the saying goes, people need to get physical and not going virtual. You might have thousands of friends in MySpace, but you don't really know them at all.

One of the real benefits of dancing with skates is that you can get a real sweat out. Just dance for an hour and you will burn off 350 calories. It is a real body trimmer, and you will get a wonderful mood after the dancing. It is also one of those rare occasions that you can exercise and still enjoy the music at the same time. If you are a gal, roller dancing on a regular basis will shape your body like a ballerina. Your muscles will be so flexible that you can even contort yourself into a little box.

But before you can dance on your skates, you will have to learn proper skating techniques and also tech yourself stability control on those wheels. Good skate dancing can only be done on quad roller skates. Inlines are not suitable, and if you have basic ice or figure skating skills, you will do well on the dance floor.

The Pro's (and woes!) of becoming a Mobile D.J!

So how do you become a Mobile D.J?, easy!, just call yourself one!. There are no diploma's or qualifications and no graduation ceremony. However the time may come where you are called upon to demonstrate your D.J'ing skills and often this will be in front of 100's of people at your first gig. Entertaining such a a large number of people can be a very daunting and nerve racking task.

Not just music and flashing lights

Mobile D.J'ing is different to club or radio D.J'ing. Just spending a fortune on the very latest equipment and latest chart music won't make you a successful D.J or get you re-booked. Being a Mobile D.J is also about being an entertainer, rather then just being a Jukebox surrounded by lots of pretty lights!. You will also have to play a lot of music genres which you may not otherwise choose to listen to by choice.

A successful D.J is one who plays to his or her Audience, who can break the ice at difficult functions and who isn't out to satisfy their own ego's. Most D.J's learn to "read" the audience, and are frequently watching the dancefloor to gauge what music will work next. At Mobile Functions such as Weddings, your audience may take some time to get onto the dancefloor and this is where Microphone work is important in order to break the ice, make your audience feel welcome and encourage them onto the dancefloor.

Where and how can I learn D.J skills and get advice?

Some people simply may not be cut out to D.J. Others may pick up the skills in a few months, others may take a year or longer. There is no hard or fast rule to learning the basics. The best, and often the most successful route to becoming a D.J is by helping another D.J at weekends.

Consider volunteering your services to another D.J locally. Helping out as a "Roadie" may not be financially rewarding but you are essentially learning new skills for free, which would cost you 100's on a course. Most D.J's will often cover your expenses and refreshments, some may even pay you, in return for your help, but don't expect to live off it, after all they are doing you a favour by teaching you a trade, and sharing their knowledge.

Learning to D.J by becoming a Roadie is the fastest way to learn the business and by actually watching another Professional D.J at work can teach you more than in a classroom or College environment. Most D.J's themselves got into the business this way, so don't be afraid to ask.

What music will I need?

This is entirely dependant on the type of functions which you are attending. Most Mobile DJ's will set themselves up to cover all types of functions from Childrens' Parties to 75th Wedding Anniversaries, and this means playing music to all age groups. Ideally you will need to invest in virtually all types of Genres. Rock & Roll, 1960's, 1970's, Disco, Funk, Soul, Motown, 1980's, 1990's as well as the latest chart and club dance music.

If you are setting yourself up as a specialist DJ, offering services for one age group or type of function, then this will be a lot easier to fund and build a music collection. However you may wish to gauge the demand for that type of music and DJ in your area.

What Equipment do I need to buy?

Again it's not the equipment which entertains, it's the D.J. By having the latest equipment it won't make you any better as a D.J. It is possible to start up on a budget of 1000, which will get you a sound system and a few lighting effects. If your budget won't stretch to this, then you may need to consider buying 2nd hand or hiring the equipment. More information on choosing equipment is covered on another article.

Any good reason to start off by helping another D.J, is that you gain the experience and also find out if D.J'ing suits you BEFORE spending a lot of money and committment on buying equipment.

Buying a comprehensive music library is far more important than how much lighting you have, and should be your first consideration. You can build up your lighting, and upgrade your sound system (if required) once the work starts coming in to justify it.

What else do I need?

Committment, dedication and enthusiasm is a must. As is patience and a good sense of humour. By definition, most Mobile D.J's work the weekends, so if you get a good reputation and a full diary, you may have to cut down on your own personal social activities, and this can also put a strain on relationships, so make sure your partner / spouse is also agreeable!.

From a professional prospective, you should also obtain some level of PLI (Public Liability Insurance), as a business within the UK it is a requirement to have some minimum level of insurance cover in order to protect you in the event of causing harm to a third party through accident or neglect. The amount of PLI cover required varies from 2 million to 10 million. You may find that 2 Million cover is adequate for your area, although some hotel chains may insist on a minimum of 5 million to work at their venues.

You may be asked to produce evidence of your PLI cover before being allowed to set up in some Hotels, and Council run establishments, so it is wise to get cover sooner, rather than later.

How about a D.J Course or Workshop?

These are few and far between especially in the UK, and usually aimed at teaching you beatmixing or turntable skills, which are of little use to the Novice Mobile D.J. If you are aiming for club work, then you may find a course to be of interest, however these courses have limited use on the Mobile Circuit.

D.J courses can cost between 100 and 1000s ($100 - $3000). Like any industry there are risks, so it is important to find out exactly what the course involves and whether the information is of any value to you before parting with your money!. Some courses may of little use, others may teach you the basics find out exactly what each one offers and weigh up the benefits to you.

Road Trip Fun

Tired of "Are we there yet?", or "I'm bored!" Here are a couple of VERY easy family games great for in the car.

Rhyming

Start with the letter A. Say a word that begins with the letter, for example: "apple". The next person has to find a word to rhyme. Everyone takes a turn finding a rhyming word. The person who can't think of a word that rhymes goes to the next letter of the alphabet and starts over. This keeps going until you reach the end of the alphabet.

One Word Association

Start with any word. The next person has to say another word that comes to their mind from the original word. This game can go for a long time because each person comes up with the new word which allows for a new association. A great family activity that will make a long road trip more like a short trip to the grocery store!

Example: Dog - bone - eat - dinner - cook - groceries - money - allowance - etc.

Seek Color

Look around as you are driving. Name items by color, not using a color twice.

The person who finds the most colors wins.

Example: Tree/green, road/gray, sign/yellow, car/blue, truck/red, etc.

Story

Begin a sentence with 2 to 4 words. The next person repeats your words and then adds 2 to 4 words of their own and so on. This continues until it has gone around enough that the story is all mixed up or forgotten. A new person then starts a new story.

For example: (1st person) Yesterday I saw...

(2nd person)Yesterday I saw a big blue...

(3rd person) Yesterday I saw a big blue ox that was ...

(4th person) Yesterday I saw a big blue ox that was sitting on top ...

(5th person) etc.

Rainy Day Actives

Can't send the kids outside to play? Try some of these activities for kids that are perfect for indoor fun.

MUSICAL STATUE

Have the children dance around to a favorite CD. Ideally one that is fun and upbeat. When the music stops, the children must hold the exact position that they were in. Anyone seen moving is out and the game continues until the last child remains. Have the children take turns running the music and you dance with them.

TREASURE CHEST

This game has been around for a long time. Although it is old, it is ALWAYS fun for both parent and child. Pick a few treasures... nothing fancy is needed... it can be candy, favorite toys, cut out stars, etc. Hide them in the house if it is a rainy day or outdoors if it is a nice day. (Be sure to note where you hid them!) Draw a map with clues on how to find the hidden treasures. And, enjoy!!! If the game ended too soon, let the children hide the treasures and you try to find it!

OTHER INDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Have a picnic inside on the floor. Have the children help you plan the menu. Maybe make a party out it and have each child invite a friend. Tell stories, by someone starting it, and then everyone adding a line. Let everyone's imagination take the story to different places

Draw picture, take turns adding the details, and tell a story along with it.

MAKING A COLLAGE

What you will need: old magazines, safety scissors for kids, glue stick, construction paper, crayons or markers

Give each child a magazine and have them go through it and cut out their favorite things (favorite animals, food, flowers, toys, etc.) Have them paste the pictures onto a piece of construction paper. They can decorate their collage with the crayons and markers. Then have the children explain what their collage is about and why they cut out the items that they did.
