Parachutes

Customer Review: Another Import CD of "Parachutes" with Great Bonus Tracks
It's been 4+ years since the original release of Coldplay's debut album in the UK (the US release would follow in Nov. 2000), and as the phenom called Coldplay is getting bigger and bigger, it's now clear that "Parachutes" is a classic, in every sense of the word. By now, the original 10 tracks of the album all have become so instantly familiar, yet never tiresome. There is of course "Yellow", the US break-through single but for me probably the weakest track on the set. Check out instead "Shiver", "Don't Panic" (with the immortal line "We Live in a Beautiful World"), "Trouble" and Sparks", 4 other singles from the album (all of them still available on Amazon). This import version of "Parachutes" (14 tracks, 56 min.) comes with 4 additional tracks on a separate CD: "Sparks" in the album version (nothing new here), but then also "Careful Where You Stand" which is a b-side from the "Shiver" single, "Yellow" in an accoustic version that in my opinion is actually better than the original version, and the hauntingly beautiful "See You Soon", which originally appeared on the "Blue Room" EP. Both "Careful" and "See You Soon" are essentials in the Coldplay catalogue. We now await Coldplay's new album, which supposedly will come out in Spring 2005. Who knows whether that's gonna be any good, but for sure it's gonna be a monster, and Coldplay is well on its way to be the next U2. Meanwhile, enjoy the humble and intimate debut album which I dare say Chris and the boys will never surpass.
Customer Review: A Breath of fresh air
When I first heard "Yellow" by Coldplay, the thing that caught my attention was how smooth this band's sound was. Upon purchasing the album, I found that I couldn't take it out of my CD player for weeks. Coldplay is definitely a breath of fresh air in the music world. The album follows, almost methodically, a perfect pattern from song-to-song. If you're one who likes to listen to an album all the way through, this album gladly gives you the honor. I recommend it to anyone in need of comfort on a cloudy day.

Over the last 45 years that I have been involved teaching Ballroom Dancing, the biggest problem that I see with Beginner Dancers is that they do not want to learn all the popular dances, they just want to learn the dance that's popular and just enough to get by. Of course, it's fun to learn more steps in your favorite dances, but not to expand your variety is a real mistake.

Can you imagine only wearing one suit of clothing day after day? How boring that would be, not only for you, but especially for the people that are around you daily. Oh, there's Mr. One Suit, or Mr. Brown Pants...Boring.

Well, increasing your dance variety insures that you will be able to stay on the dance floor and keep having a good time with your favorite dance partner. The worst feeling is having to tell your special lady friend that we will have to sit this dance out because you don't know how to dance to the music that's playing. Before you know it, your lady is off dancing with someone else...
When you're having a good time, do you want to interrupt the flow of the evening? I don't think so..

Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Rumba, Cha Cha, East & West Coast Swing, Salsa, Mambo, Samba, Meringue. are the popular Night Club dances. The more you learn about these dances, the more you realize that they interrelate in one way or another...For example, a box step can be done in Foxtrot, Waltz, or Rumba, but of course the styling characteristics will differ from dance to dance, which will make each dance look different...

It's much better to learn 4 or 5 steps in all these dances, then to learn 25 steps in one or two of the dances. Why? Because, diversity on the dance floor will make you a sought after dance partner, and a more popular individual around your own social group. plus you will overcome a Beginners Nightmare, to be considered a BORING dance partner...

Remember Gentlemen, if you don't know all the dances, the other guy will.

Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine - Homecoming Concert

Customer Review: Homecoming Concert One More Time...
This is the concert where I fell in love with Gloria and the MSM. The music is classic and the performance brings me back to my happy teen years. I have played the video at least once/week for the last 15 years and it never fails to make me feel good. Gloria's outfits are very sexy and alot of fun to look at. From the thigh boots and tight body outfit it to the chaps wearing biker chick look she oozes Sex Appeal. Hoping some day it'll be on DVD and re-released as a Classic. Joanne
Customer Review: Excellente (y Caliente?)
This is a classic concert. And I agree that it should be released on DVD. "Words Get in the Way" performed accousticly with John and Jorge on guitars, "FANTASTIC". Or how about Gloria looking "Caliente" wearing jeans covered by some leather cowboy stuff. Next year I went to the concert in Rotterdam, but she didn't wear the outfit. Hahahha. Should have asked my money back. No, seriously. This tape is EXCELLENTE (Y CALIENTE?).

Many years ago my husband and I would often go to parties. We weren't Christians back then, so in our opinion, we considered that music had the sole purpose of being danced to.

We would dance a lot. But sometimes the disk jockey would get caught up in a certain kind of music we disliked. So we left the dance floor and we'd wait for our favorite music to play again.

Sometimes my husband would kindly request the disk jockey to play some favorite song of ours, or a special kind of music to dance to. And off we'd go again a'swinging and a'dancing.

Okay, but what has that got to do with self-directed learning? More than you think.

You see, the other day I heard somebody make a frustrating exclamation about his life, "They play the music and I have to dance to it."

Inevitably I had to ask myself, "Whose music am I dancing to?"

Immediately I realized that there are so many of us who are dancing to another's song.

You try to move and sway to the rhythm, but it doesn't come from the heart. You just go through the motions. Everybody else seems to be happily dancing, but you just cannot manage to tune in.

It's not your song.

We all have a unique song in our heart. A song God put there. And He specially designed and created us to dance to that particular song.

It is a song that would keep us on the dance floor forever. We'd never get tired of it. Because it is so deeply rooted in our innermost being. It is our passion, our dream.

Whether we choose to listen to it or not, that song will always be pulling at our hearts. Calling us to dance.

Today I want to ask you, "Whose music are you dancing to?"

Are you gong with the flow, or are you passionately pursuing the dreams God put in your heart? I'd like to invite you to go for it! Is your student body planning a high school prom, dance, or party? Do you need ideas for your themes? Well look no further we can help spark your creative juices by going over several factors that determine a successful prom.

High School Homecoming

Most High School Homecomings are organized by Student Council Advisors. Now the main idea for a homecoming is to promote school spirit. The planning that goes into a homecoming or party is not as involved as your High School Prom. This does not mean that the decorations should get overlooked at your schools homecoming. We will discuss those ideas later.

High School Prom

At a majority of High Schools, their Proms are planned by the Junior Class Prom Committee. The prom is the send off for the school's upper class students. There can be two separate proms depending on the size of your junior and senior class. Some schools in different districts go as far as to combine proms due to smaller class sizes. Since the High School Prom is a formal event, it is usually receives more attention and funding.

High School Homecoming Dance Ideas

So you and your committee are looking for ideas for your homecoming, dance, or party. Your themes depend mostly on the traditions of your school. Try to tie in what your school mascot. If your party or dance is something more casual, then it may be predetermined. The basic ingredients for successful school homecoming dance are music, hype, and energy. The company you hire for the Michigan DJ can make or break your ticket sales for the next dance depending on how the music was balanced. How well your committee hypes the party will determine the outcome as well. Do not forget that the energy level at your school homecoming dance will be based on how much decorating your group does.

High School Prom Themes

Your High School Prom theme deserves more attention than the typical High School Homecoming. This means spending more time selecting a reputable venue location, caterer, photographer, and Michigan DJ Company. Here is a list of High School Prom themes for you to choose from.

Selecting a theme and going over ideas will help guarantee a fun and memorable event. This is a key component in producing an unforgettable prom or homecoming dance. First, think about the type of prom you want to have, whether you want it to be romantic, fun, or mysterious. Most schools develop themes that generally set the guidelines for the prom colors and decorations. Some schools have become more creative by revolving the entire dance party around the theme and ideas. This goes all the way down to the students costume attire to decorations. Whatever theme your committee chooses, make sure it fits the personality and customs of your student body.

English contains many words adopted from other languages. In fact, experts estimate 80% of English words originated elsewhere. The biggest influence on English vocabulary is Latin. An examination of the 20,000 most used words reveals 5,000 words contain prefixes and over 80% of these use one of only fourteen of the many different prefixes available. By learning these important prefixes, you can improve your mastery of the English language. You will be able to discern at least a partial meaning of words you encounter for the first time by understanding the basic meaning of its prefix.

Listed below are the most used prefixes, their meanings, and example words. To get the most out of seeing these prefixes, copy them into a notebook. Write down the prefix, its definition, and several examples of its use. You can add examples by looking for more in your dictionary. Practice using the words in your writing and speaking. Look for words with these prefixes in newspaper, magazine, or books and underline them. The more you engage the word in some way (writing, speaking, or underlining), the better you will remember it.

Ab- (away from) abhor, abject, abnormal, absolve

Ad- (to, toward) adapt, adept, adhere, adhesion

Be- (on all sides, overly) bedeck, beset, besmear, besprinkle

Com-, con-, co- (with, together) comfort, commence, compel, complain

De- (reversal, undoing, downward) deceit, decipher, default, deliver

Dis- dif- (not, reversal) differ, difficulty, disable, dishonor

Em-, en- (in, into, to cover or contain) embrace, embroider, engage, engrave

Ex- (out of, former) exalt, examine, example, excerpt

In- (into, not) incline, inconsistent, indecisive, induce

Pre- (before) prejudice, prepare, prescribe, preserve, pretend

Pro- (in favor of, before) proclaim, procure, produce, profound

Re- (again, restore) renew, resolve, reveal, revert

Sub- (under, beneath) subcontract, subculture, subject, subordinate

Un- (do the opposite of) unravel, unroll, unseat, unskilled

Although Latin is considered a "dead" language by many, it lives on in the English vocabulary. Not only do many existing words originate from Latin, many new words are constructed from Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. New words to describe or name scientific processes or discoveries are often formed from Latin. Think of words like computer, internet, and digital radio. For digital television, you need to be familiar with both Latin and Greek, the other big contributor to the English language.

You can learn more about Greek contributions to the English vocabulary in my next article titled "It was Greek to Me: Improving Your English by Knowing Greek Roots".

Back to the Start

'Coldplay: Back To The Start' is the first complete and unauthorized DVD of the band to be released. From their earliest days, through to lead singer Chris Martin's constant insecurities and the struggles to hold the band together, this DVD brings the st
Customer Review: What a complete waste
I'm blown away by how worthless this DVD is. Imagine you're putting together about a DVD about a band. You'd probably include interviews w/ band members, live and/or recording footage, maybe some behind the scenes footage of the band. This DVD has ABSOLUTELY NONE of that. It's all interviews with random people, most of whom don't know the band. "Parachutes is a great debut album. It shipped X number of copies." What a complete waste of $15. I'm a huge fan of the band, so if I can't appreciate this DVD, you won't either.
Customer Review: Absolute rubbish
When I bought this, I rushed home to watch it - I was that excited. I started to fast forward after 25 minutes because it was simply awful. None of the band members were directly featured in the documentary. The people interviewed were loosely associated with the band from the past but nobody of particular relevance. For instance, they interview some people that used to go to school with Chris or someone that used to work in a pub with Guy. 95% of the interview footage is taken up by an ex-producer, biographer - Martin Roach, and some DJ about her thoughts on Coldplay. There is no Coldplay music used in the film. All the background music has been created to resemble Coldplay and it's absolute rubbish. There is probably about three minutes of actual footage of Coldplay but they are not direct interviews. The rest is all photographs of the band. This documentary is the pits. Such filmmaking resources were better invested elsewhere rather than trying to capitalise on the band's success and fans spending money.

Did you know?

France is the birthplace of Pierre de Coubertin, who is the father of the Olympic Movement. This Frenchman was born on January 1, 1863 in Paris. Pierre once said, "The Olympic Movement gives the world an ideal which reckons with the reality of life, and includes a possibility to guide this reality toward the great Olympic idea".

The Summer Olympic Games were held in Paris in 1900. For the first time, sportswomen were allowed to compete in the Olympics ( six tennis players ). France won first place in the Games with 26 gold, 41 silver and 34 bronze medals.

Marie-Jos Prec was one of France's greatest sportswomen. She was born in Guadeloupe ( Caribbean island ) and moved to France with her mother when she was sixteen. Marie-Jose became the second female athlete in the history of the Olympic Games to sweep the 200m and 400m ( Atlanta'96 ).

Like Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Reunion, New Caledonia -French territory in Oceania- is not member of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ). Why? France does not allow its territories to compete in the Olympics. For this reason, New Caledonia's athletes can not compete in the Olympic Games. Unlike Guam ( American territory ), Aruba ( Dutch territory ) and Bermuda ( British territory ), it did not compete in the 2004 Olympics. Ironically, New Caledonia has several famous sportspeople in the South Pacific. Aquatics: Olivier Saminadin, Thomas Dahlia, Thomas Chacun, Reine-Victora Weber, Lara Grangeon, Diana Bui-Duyet, Adeline Williams and Gilles Durnesnil. Archery: Laurent Clerte, Emmanuel Guilhard, Henry Shiu, Isabelle Soeno and Sylvena Plazenet. Paris is recognized as one of the most romantic cities in the world and yet it is appreciated for it's cultural sophistication as well. It is a great city to visit if you truly love the arts. Many people believe the ballet and opera actually began in Paris. If you enjoy ballet and opera than a visit to Paris without attending the opera or ballet is regrettable.

Ballet is a formalized form of dance with its origins in the Italian Renaissance court of the 15th century. One can consider that the real beginning of the Paris Opera Ballet occured in 1661. Ballet developed further in the French court from the time of Louis XIV in the 17th century hence the term ballet which is from the French vocabulary.

Ballet de l'Opera National de Paris is rated one of the best dance companies in the world; it outdoes itself in both the classics and avant-garde, staged in the same aspect of Opera.
It is universally agreed that the ballet in Paris is truly one of a kind. The performers are recognized worldwide.

The Opera is a spectacular theatrical concert featuring singers who spend several hours practicing and performing. Many in the audience leave in awe wondering how these opera singers can sing the way that they do. Their costumes and the way they perform almost take you into another place or time.

In 1989, the Bicentennial of the French Revolution was marked by the inauguration of the Opera Bastille, a 2700-seat auditorium acoustics and stage vision of its are unrivaled so to get a seat you need to reserve months in advance. The productions are both popular and critically acclaimed. The site's multi-functional performance space also hosts various concert and dance programs. Place de la Bastille, 75012 Paris. Metro: Bastille

The sumptuous and prestigious Paris Opera building, designed by Charles Garnier in 1861 and completed in 1875, is one of the largest theatre venues in the world The Opera Garnier stage is 118,404 square feet, accommodate 450 players. The tale for the classic horror movie, The Phantom of the Opera, was in the Opera Garnier.

For an entry fee, you can stroll around the interior at your leisure (except occasionally during rehearsals). Since the opening of the Opra Bastille, the Opera Garnier has devoted its repertoire exclusively to ballet. Though its productions are internationally renowned for their quality, they tend to remain on the traditional side of contemporary dance. The Ballet de l'Opera de Paris and the Opera National de Paris schedule some performances here and some at the Opera de la Bastille. In both venues, reduced ticket prices may be available at the box office 15 minutes before performance time for students and people under 25 or over 65. Place de l'Opera, 75009 Paris. Metro: Opera. RER: Auber.

Thtre Musical de Paris (Theatre du Chatelet) lies between the Pont au Change (which crosses to the Ile de la Cite) and the boulevard de Sebastopol. These theatres were built by Davioud in 1862, and each now leads a separate and even rival existence. The Chatelet concentrates mainly on opera and classical music, with occasional ballet, and usually has a rich program of international performers. (It recently acquired an annex in Les Halles, the Auditorium, where more unusual or obscure music is performed.) The other theatre, previously named the Sarah Bernhardt and now known as the Theatre de la Ville, offers top names in contemporary dance, innovative French theatre, and evening concerts of jazz or world music.

Before the Bastille Opera opened, and with the Garnier's transition to an all-dance programme, the TMP was the only Parisian venue offering a complete programme of high-quality opera. Despite the arrival of such a massive rival, the TMP has continued its ambitious schedule of progressive, well-made productions. Address: 1, place du Chatelet, 75001 Paris; phone: 01-40-28-28-98; fax: 01-42-36-89-75; Metro/RER: Chatelet.

Some countries offer scholarships to Paris for those they feel are good enough in the art of ballet or opera, and it's no wonder why. With every talented ballet student or opera singer that comes out of Paris, more of the world has the opportunity to enjoy a piece of Paris.

So, after seeing the sites during the day, and you like the ballet or the opera they usually perform at night and this would be a great thing to do to end a great day.

There's a place where MUSIC lives. A place where music hangs its hat and puts its feet up on the furniture. A place where people don't just talk about SONGS and CDs and lyrics, but live them night and day. That place is Nashville, MUSIC CITY. Nashville is also a place to visit throughout the year with ideal climates for all seasons.

Visit Music City year-round:

Spring is a delightful time in Middle Tennessee as the rolling hills are a lush, vibrant green. Because of the mild climate found, many plants are well suited for the area including tulips, azaleas, irises, magnolias and dogwoods. Days are warm while evenings can be chilly.

Summer is ablaze with many concert festivals in Music City. Several nights during the week you'll find live outdoor concerts scattered around town. Midday can be very warm as the humidity tends to be higher in the summer months. Light clothing and sunscreen is recommended for the full season.

Fall is a celebrated time throughout Tennessee. Visitors come from all over to see the annual changing of the leaves in mid-October. Days are warm and pleasant. Evenings require a sweater or light jacket. Since the weather is changeable, layered clothing is a good idea to accommodate sunny days and cooler nights.

Winter is a great time to visit the city's many attractions decked out in their holiday finery as Nashville truly shines throughout the winter with millions of twinkling lights. Although the climate is mild, winter temperatures do range from cool to cold. If a snowfall occurs, it is usually in January or February and is seldom heavy.
