DID YOU KNOW ...

Taismary Aguero was born and raised in Cuba before becoming a naturalized Italian citizen. She is one of the most famous volleyball players in the 2000s. Under the hands of Taismary Aguero, Cuba won the gold medal in volleyball in the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. However, she escaped to Italy in 2001 and having won a national team call-up became the first naturalized volleyball player to score for Italy. Perhaps her greatest triumph was captaining her new country to their first World Cup triumph in Tokyo, Japan, in 2007. Ironically, Italy, led by the amazing play of Taismary Aguero, defeated Cuba 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-16) in the finals.

Cuba did not sent a boxing team to the 1985 World Cup in Seoul, South Korea's capital. Why? Because Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz did not recognize South Korea as an independent and sovereign country. There were many famous boxers who did not go to Korea: Juan Torres Odelin, Pedro Orlando Reyes, Arnaldo Mesa Borell, Jesus Sollet Tomasen, Adolfo Horta Martinez, Eduardo Correa Ferrer, Candelario Duvergel Odelin, Angel Espinoza Capo, Julio Quintana Martinez, Pablo Romero Hernandez and Teofilo Stevenson Lawrence.

Ramon Fonst Segundo has won more Olympic gold medals than Teofilo Stevenson (boxing), Alberto Juantorena Danger (track and field), Mireya Luis Hernandez (volleyball) and Felix Savon Fabre (boxing).Who is he? Ramon Fonst was a famous fencer in the 1900s, 1920s and 1930s.
He was born into a sports-oriented family in the Cuban capital of Havana on August 31, 1883. His father was a sportsman in the 1870s and 1880s. Like Jose Raul Capablanca (chess) and Eligio Sardinas Montalvo (boxing), he was an athlete who always competed with love for Cuba.
Ramn Fonst obtained 125 medals in competitions held in Europe, Latin America and North America. In the 1900 Olympic Games in France, Ramon won the gold medal in the epee event, and in the 1904 Summer Olympics in the United States, he won three gold medals. In 1926, he won two gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City. Certainly, Ramon Fonst is the greatest Latin American athlete of the 20th century.

In the early 1990s, large number of athletes began leaving their country because of poor economic conditions there and severe treatment by the secret police. Many sought refuge in the United States, Spain and Canada.

Cuba sent 2 athletes to the 2003 World University Games, which were held in Daegu, South Korea. They were Yordanis Arencibia and Yurileidys Lupetey ( judo).

The 1987 World Junior Volleyball Championship was boycotted by Cuba. The place: South Korea. For the first time since 1978, volleyball players from Cuba did not part in an Olympic tournament. The team Cuban did not defend its world title it had won in Rome two years before.

Cuba sent 120 athletes to the 1973 World Student Games, which were held in Moscow, USSR (currently Russia). The Cuban contingent participated in nine Olympic sports: basketball, athletics, fencing, gymnastics, volleyball, waterpolo, diving, tennis and wrestling. The best athlete was Alberto Juantorena, who won a gold medal in the men's 400 meters.

The Second Baseball World Cup was played in 1939 in Cuba. Three teams took part and the hosts beat Nicaragua in the final in Havana.

In 2006, Osmany Juantorena Portuondo was the 18th Cuban athlete to be disqualified for drugs. He is Alberto Juantorena's grandson.

The Cuban dictatorship restricts the sports people's contacts with non-allies nations (especially South Korea, Poland, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Hungary and the Czech Republic). It allows few Cuban athletes to travel outside the country.

DID YOU ALSO KNOW THAT:

Like Alexandre Alekhine (France), Bobby Fischer (USA) and Garry Gasparov (Russia), Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera is considered by experts as one of the most important chess players of the twentieth century. He won the title of world chess champion from 1921 to 1927.
Where was Jose Capablanca born? He was born on November 19, 1888, in Havana.

The problem of illegal drug usage among Cuban athletes closed the competition in the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela. The most notable disqualification was Cuban weighlifter Daniel Nunez, who had won a gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, URSS. He was voted athlete of the year for 1982 by Prensa Latina.

Jorge Enrico Blanco was one of the Cuba's best known and well-loved boxers. Why? In 1967, he won the Pan American lightweight title.

In the Olympic Games of 1904, the Cuban fencing team won 8 medals (3 golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronzes).

Maria Teresa Mora Iturralde was a famous chess player. In 1922, she won the National Chess Championship of Cuba.

From 1954 to 1968, Bertha Diaz won 258 gold medals. At the Pan American Games in 1955, she won the 60-meter sprint and qualified for the 1956 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, she escaped from Cuba in the 1960s when it became a communist dictatorship. In 1956, she set a new Pan American record of 11.20 seconds in the 80-meter hurdles.

In February 1950, Rafael Emilio Fortun Chacon set a new Cuban and world record in the 100-meter sprint at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Guatemala City.He was born on Agust 5, 1919, in Camaguey, Cuba.

Manuel Sanguily became the first Cuban swimmer to classify in the finals at the Olympic Games, where he ended seventeenth in the world in 200-meter breaststroke style competition in Australia in 1956.

The Cuban volleyball team is a disaster. Why? Because more than 14 volleyball players sought political asylum in Europe and Puerto Rico (2001-2007). They included: Raydel Poey, Yasser Portuondo, Javier Gonzalez, Javier Brito, Maikel Salas, Yosleider Cala, Osvaldo Hernandez, Dennis Angel, Alexis Battle, Laseer Romero, Ramon Gato, Jorge Luis Hernandez, Ihosvany Hernandez and Leonel Marshall.

Alejandro Guevara Onofre: He is a freelance writer. Alejandro is of Italian, African and Peruvian ancestry. He's studied political science and journalism. He has published more than seventy-five research papers in English, and more than twenty in Spanish, concerning the world issues, Olympic sports, countries and tourism. His next essay is called "The Dictator and Alicia Alonso". He is an expert on foreign affairs. Furthermore, Alejandro is the first author who has published a world-book encyclopedia in Latina America.

He admires Frida Kahlo (Mexican painter), Hillary Clinton (former First Lady of the USA), and Jimmy Carter (former President of the USA). His favorite film is "Gorillas in the Mist". Some of his favorite books are "The Return of Eva Peron and the Killings in Trinidad" (by V.S.Naipaul), "Las Mujeres de los Dictadores" (by Juan Gasparini) and "Murder of a Gentle Land" (by John Barron and Anthony Paul). His personal motto is "The future is for those people who believe in the beauty of their dreams" by Eleanor Roosevelt.

Customer Review: great system
I am now on the 3rd and final level of Rosetta Stone's Spanish (Latin America). I have been very impressed with the series. I do also use Pimsleur Spanish CDs in my car to supplement my learning. I'd recommend both to anyone interested in learning any language.
Customer Review: Installation challenges
This version is sold as Vista compatible, however installation was not straight forward with Vista Ultimate as operating system. Once installed there is an error message as the file framedynos.dll is not found. We needed to copy it into the program directory. The activation program does not work with Vista, we needed to disconnect the PC from the internet and activate via phone. Neither of these two problems was listed in the manual. The good thing was that the phone service was available even late in the night. Once these two hurdles were overcome the program seems to be working well.

'Coldplay: Back To The Start' is the first complete and unauthorized DVD of the band to be released. From their earliest days, through to lead singer Chris Martin's constant insecurities and the struggles to hold the band together, this DVD brings the st
Customer Review: What a complete waste
I'm blown away by how worthless this DVD is. Imagine you're putting together about a DVD about a band. You'd probably include interviews w/ band members, live and/or recording footage, maybe some behind the scenes footage of the band. This DVD has ABSOLUTELY NONE of that. It's all interviews with random people, most of whom don't know the band. "Parachutes is a great debut album. It shipped X number of copies." What a complete waste of $15. I'm a huge fan of the band, so if I can't appreciate this DVD, you won't either.
Customer Review: Absolute rubbish
When I bought this, I rushed home to watch it - I was that excited. I started to fast forward after 25 minutes because it was simply awful. None of the band members were directly featured in the documentary. The people interviewed were loosely associated with the band from the past but nobody of particular relevance. For instance, they interview some people that used to go to school with Chris or someone that used to work in a pub with Guy. 95% of the interview footage is taken up by an ex-producer, biographer - Martin Roach, and some DJ about her thoughts on Coldplay. There is no Coldplay music used in the film. All the background music has been created to resemble Coldplay and it's absolute rubbish. There is probably about three minutes of actual footage of Coldplay but they are not direct interviews. The rest is all photographs of the band. This documentary is the pits. Such filmmaking resources were better invested elsewhere rather than trying to capitalise on the band's success and fans spending money.

Getz/Gilberto

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. His lines, at once decisive and evanescent, focus the rest of the group's performance without overpowering. A classic. --Fernando Gonzalez
Customer Review: Wonderful Music!
Wonderful and relaxing music. Very soft, wonderful sound tracks. There are two soundtracks of "The Girl From Ipanema," with the first being the ultimate recording. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys cool jazz or any relaxing International-style music.
Customer Review: A Serendipitous Masterpiece
In history, seemingly all great things are happenstance. One could certainly say the same about this serendipitous recording. A quiet, gentle, beautiful record of 8 songs (and 2 reprises) it created a time capsule of that era that surprisingly stands up to todays standards. A great album to relax to, put it on when you need to seriously unwind without drugs or alcohol. It works amazingly well.

Most of us are very familiar with the dance between peace and chaos. Everything is going smoothly or at least nothing stands out as being a major challenge. We feel like life has allowed us to take a deep breath. We feel we have finally reached balance. Then along comes something to deal with, something that demands our focus, and something that re-orders our priorities. We wonder when we are going to finally reach a peaceful equilibrium and blissful homeostasis.

In his book Toxic Success, Paul Pearsall writes that this state of balance isn't something that is natural for us. Balance does not happen in nature; there are times of peace, followed by upheaval and then the pattern repeats itself. As humans, he says, we may desire arriving at some perfect state, but this is not our nature. Life is always in process. For many of us, this doesn't feel like good news.

I used to think whenever I achieved some desired state that I would be "done". As someone who likes to get things done I started to notice that no matter how neatly the goal or vision seemed to convey completion to me, once achieved there was always something beyond that achievement, state or idea. The old saying that the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next took on personal meaning for me. However, the question occurred to me, if we could ever be done or complete, would we need to be students of the school of life on planet Earth?

Chaos allows us to create and recreate and can catapult us to the next level of personal and spiritual development if we work with it rather than resist it. If we yield to chaos and learn from it, chaos can be an incredible teacher. For those of us who love a bit of control, this idea may feel challenging to integrate.

I'm not talking about cheap contrived drama when I write of chaos. I'm writing about chaos that arises naturally from participation in life which forces us out of our comfort zone and spurs us on to our next level of human potential. If we feel like we needn't grow or learn anymore, we aren't advancing the plot. Perhaps paradoxically, this is not to suggest that you are not whole as you are, you are, but your expression in the world can be deepened and developed by embracing change and the dance between peace and chaos.

The chaos of the world can certainly enhance our spiritual development. We can embrace both the temporal and the spiritual and each can inform the choices of the other. A Buddhist may characterize this vacillation as the dance between samsara and nirvana. Samsara is about life in the world and nirvana is the blissful peace state of the enlightened master.

Many of us feel we want to be only in the state of nirvana and we get very discouraged and even plain bummed out when we have to deal with messiness of samsara. We are tempted to think if only we could be on a mountain top and in the lotus position blissed-out we would be happy! But chances are good you would still be struggling with samsara even then. Maybe your bum would be sore from sitting so long, maybe you would feel cold and chapped sitting on a Tibetan mountain top and perhaps you would miss your loved ones.

If we could accept from the beginning that temporal life is always in a state of change, we might be able to accept the dance as we are moving to the music.

Hindus believe that the chaos we speak of is maya or illusion. This perspective may help us deal with the chaos but not get caught up in it. Further, if we yearn neither for peace or chaos, samsara or nirvana, but accept both states, as if we are holding them gently in our open hand, we may develop and deepen our inner peace and truth that can be a great comfort to us in times up change, upheaval and struggle. Let's forgive ourselves for not yet operating from the perspective of an enlightened master and accept ourselves as learning pilgrims on life's journey with its many vicissitudes.

I help women from all over the world design a simplified, meaningful, purposeful and joyful life based on their own strengths, values and priorities. I also coach women towards their ultimate purpose, full of spiritual meaning, connection, humor, compassion and assist them in overcoming any existential suffering. I utilize a strategic and holistic approach in transforming challenges into transcendent integration of joy. I have nearly 25 years experience in working in people helping professions.

90s dance music

Maximum Coldplay

All of us know what jazz is when we hear it, but trying to define it is a different matter. With so many variant styles, coming up with an accurate definition of jazz is difficult if not impossible.

But I suppose that an article on jazz really ought to attempt to define the term jazz. My Thorndike-Barnhart Dictionary defines jazz like this:

*jazz (jaz), noun. 1. American music with the accents falling at unusual places; syncopated music. 2. Slang, liveliness adj. of or like jazz: a jazz band.

Besides not telling us very much, it is also obviously false. I think immediately of ballads played by jazz musicians, such as Thelonious Monks Round Midnight and Bill Evans Peace Piece, and countless other examples. They are based on neither syncopation nor liveliness; they are slow, extremely thoughtful, and the antithesis of jazzy. Yet they are considered by both jazz musicians and jazz critics alike to be well within the mainstream of jazz.

Lets try A New Dictionary of Music and see if we can get closer to the essence of jazz:

*jazz, a term used at least from 1914 for a type of American popular music originating among blacks of New Orleans and taken over also by whites; also used generally for various types of dance music indebted to this (though purists reserve the term for such music as retains the original flavor and the original basis of improvisation.) The jazz idiom, characterized by certain syncopations over strongly reiterated rhythms, has influenced e.g. Lambert, Stravinsky, and Milhaud, as well as many American composers.

Thats better than the Thorndike-Barnhart definition, but it still leans heavily toward defining jazz in terms of rhythm alone: characterized by certain syncopations over strongly reiterated rhythms. I think again of ballads, but also of much contemporary jazz which is not characterized by certain syncopations,: such as the work of pianists Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.

What then is jazz? If the general dictionaries and musical dictionaries cant satisfactorily answer the question, what hope is there for us?

Ask a hundred jazz musicians what jazz is, and youll get a hundred different answers (I know Ive asked at least a dozen and gotten as many different responses.)

I would like to suggest that the answer may lie, not in music, but in semantics.

I think it is entirely possible that we are lumping together widely disparate types of music, and labeling them all with the term jazz, then wondering why we cant come up with a lexical definition of the term. Maybe we should abandon the word jazz, and use terms such as improvised fast syncopated music, or improvised slow non-syncopated music. Maybe we should, but we wont. So we are stuck with the non-definable term jazz.

So lets not define jazz.

We all know what it is, more or less. We would disagree mainly in the grey areas, such as ballads, some contemporary works, and so forth. But lets agree not to disagree, and just enjoy it.

The following articles in this series will deal with the various styles we find in jazz, from ragtime to fusion.

So stay tuned.

Scientist

The Second Single from the Chart Topping Album "a Rush of Blood to the Head".
Customer Review: 'I Ran Away' is the sole reason to buy this
The Scientist is a very good song, I agree, but the best track on this disc and out of all of Coldplay's work has to be I Ran Away. The song is just so awesome. The guitar takes you to another place, the percussion is excellent, and the lyrics go perfectly with the song. If you like Coldplay, you must get ahold of this song as soon as possible.
Customer Review: Top notch song.
Now, I don't normally like British people. Their accent annoys me, but Coldplay are very cool British people. This song rules. The video kind of makes me think, how did he do that? But, the song is a great song.

For many years now, the list of top wedding songs selected by the bride and groom have included some of the most outlandish, ill-fitting and simply awful songs to ever grace the radio waves.

There seems to be an unwritten rule that certain songs must make the list of wedding songs played by a DJ or band. The "Chicken Dance" and "Macarena" immediately come to mind. Yes, the upside is that they are easy songs to get anyone dancing and there is absolutely no skill involved.

The list of top wedding songs from the last few years includes some real stinkers. I'm sure you've heard a few at a wedding reception.

Maybe it was a "one hit wonder" from thirty years ago, or perhaps it was a suggestive rap song where the bride and groom were rubbing up and down each other in a motion that was a little embarrasing to some.

The choice of music at your wedding is an area that requires careful thought, because all the wedding planning can go out the door when inappropriate or tacky songs are played.

But is it really necessary to do these? Break from the trend and just say "No" to line dancing or any dance that requires wriggling a butt like a piece of poultry.

Let your wedding planner be a voice of reason when making the list of wedding songs to give to the DJ or band. What might seem funny and unique now may be a source of embarrassment later.

Do you really want the videographer catching you dancing to a head banging song? Don't give in to the temptation to go with these type of popular wedding songs. Be adventurous, yet at the same time use some common sense.

Grandpa can't break dance so why not give him a slow waltz to show off his talents.

AC/DC's "She Shook Me" is a great song for a party, but it may not go over so well on the list of wedding songs you want played at the reception. Or at least not until after the older or more conservative members of the reception have adjourned for the night.

Yes it is your wedding, but a little care in choosing your own top wedding songs can go a long way in making the day a wonderful affair for all.

Fireworks Capitol Records 2001 Sampler - Various Artists

As the back to school flyers pour in and I visually digest the crisp images of mechanical pencils and Shrek lunch boxes, I am compelled to seek out new learning opportunities to make the rainy dying days of summer a smooth transition into winter.

Between Toastmasters Club, community orchestras, night classes at the local community college and a botched attempt at learning saxophone five autumns past, I have realised my school-aged programming has left a permanent impression: I see brown leaves and I run for the nearest sign-up sheet.

I decided this year, after having delved into expensive hobbies and projects started and soon abandoned, to limit my fall learning frenzies to those activities which are affordable, work well with my busy life as a wife and mother and which I am sure I will stick to long-term.

So I went out and bought a piano.

Affordable? Not really. It set us back from buying a new couch, but as I explained to my loved ones that if you dexterously avoid the gaping holes and sharp jutting springs, the existing couch really is quite comfortable.

Non-intrusive to family life? The thing takes up half of my living room and almost all of my attention, resulting in several burned suppers, neglected piles of dishes and ignored phone calls. Things of little importance when I am immersed in a snappy rendition of “Polly Wolly Doodle.”

Which leads to the last criteria: Will I stick with it long-term? You betcha!

To be honest, I did not expect this new musical venture to be this successful. I've always wanted a piano in my home; my German heritage nagging, “it's not home unless it's got a piano.” As a violinist and violin junkie I've never much cared for piano music (I know I'll get heat from my piano-playing colleagues for that one).

I figured I'd noodle around on it here and there, waiting until my preschool-aged son was taking lessons for it to be studied on, as my past ventures in new instruments (saxophone, bagpipes and other instruments that require air) resulted in me me giving up from breathless frustration.

As the burly piano movers heaved the massive antique into place, one of them wheezed, “Someone had better learn to play this thing.” Though I was down with a gawdawful flu the day the piano arrived, I played it for hours at a time, ignoring my 39-degree fever and laryngitis.

I started with the basics: “Twinkle Twinkle” and “Mary had a Little Lamb.” Ok, I have no pride.

I found the whole “two hand, two clef” concept a bit of a hurdle, like severing one half of my brain from the other then asking them to co-operate. After three days of inspired practice (and cold leftovers for dinner) things seemed to click and other songs flowed more easily.

I've discovered I'm really good at this, a real natural! I play a wicked two-handed “Chicken Dance” and I'm pretty solid at the first page of Beethoven's “Moonlight” Sonata. Ok, fifteen years of violin playing and a college music education probably has something to do with that, but let me dream!

In the past learning a new instrument, or anything new for that matter, was unbearably frustrating because didn't like feeling like a “beginner” and set unachievable goals. I enjoy playing piano far too much to wreck it with guilt or self-doubt, so I am softening my expectations and have surrendered to my vulnerability in starting over again. This humbling experience has gained me far more respect for my students who, like me, are beginners in an instrument.

It feels like I'm back in school again with all the other kids, learning and growing with my mechanical pencil and lunch box, singing “Poll-y Woll-y Doo-dle all the Day!”

Customer Review: Gaby Spanic Rocks!
When I seen this novela I was so glued to the TV I couldn't wait to see it everyday and sat-sun were the worse! I am so very happy they release such a classic on DVD. Granted, it may be edited and short but I think the reason why they did that was because they figured people who are buying it already know what happens. In my case, I wouldn't need the complete novela because I already saw it and I just wouldn't have the time. So this being edited has it's advantages for those who already saw it and loved it. After this novela, Gaby Spanic became one of my favorite spanish actresses! She did such a wonderful job and how brutal she was portraying the mean sister! I highly suggest you invest in this novela!
Customer Review: A Fantastic Story!!
A nice edited telenovela..you guys should buy this..even though there's no subtitile..but you can easily understand the whole story..you guys should buy this DVD!!
